Stop Sun Services' Layoffs and Transfer Their Management

When Sun Services LLC took over the custodial operations at Wesleyan University, their management team began a campaign of harassment. The custodial workers have endured constant verbal abuse, threats and retaliatory discipline from supervisors and the manager in charge of their operations at Wesleyan.

More urgently, Sun Services has demonstrated a general disregard for workers' safety on the job, using cleaning chemicals that have made workers sick, and increasing their workload leading to injuries. And even though the company is clearly under-staffed (management has been seen doing the work of custodians) they're now implementing layoffs of 10-13 of the 60 custodians on campus. These layoffs will be happening very soon if the administration does not step-in immediately.

Wesleyan University Alumni, known for their concern for social justice and dignity for every member of the Wesleyan community, are asked to stop all financial contributions to the university until Sun Services abandons its layoff plans and transfers their management team off the Wesleyan campus. It's unfortunate to have taken it to this point, but the administration has not thus far been responsive to the workers or their student and community supporters.

Wesleyan needs to set realistic standards for workers and not play games with. These are persons whom have been performing the labor for years, they are undermanned.

I attend Wesleyan University, and I care about the human rights of the workers here. Their conditions are downright awful, and the university NEEDS to do something about this.
