In spite of the unprecedented growth of eating disorders in the past two decades, eating disorders research continues to be under-funded, insurance coverage for treatment is inadequate, and societal pressures to be thin remain rampant. In the United States, as many as 10 million females and 1 million males are fighting a life and death battle with an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia. Millions more are struggling with binge eating disorder.
The Federal Response to Eliminate Eating Disorders Act will amend the Public Health Service Act to require the Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to expand, intensify, and coordinate eating disorder research. I will also authorize the Director to award grants for consortia in eating disorder research and support similar efforts toward the elimination of eating disorders.

By signing this petition you are letting our representitives know that eating disorders have a significant impact on our society and deserve significant support to be eliminated. Let your voice be heard today!

Having suffered from anorexia nervosa for over 30 years, I support the FREED Act. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder, yet have the lowest funds allocated towards research. It is urgent that our government allocate more money for eating disorder research, and that treatment be more accessible. The Mental Health Parity laws in some states do not apply to Medicaid or Medicaid managed care health plans. I urge the United States Senate, as well as every member of all government legislative bodies and the NIH to spend some money on research and clinical trials to save lives lost each day to these deadly illnesses.

Eating disorders need the medical attention and research they deserve. It has been overly stereotyped and underestimated for too long.

My 17yr old daughter has been fighting Anorexia for over 2 years she almost died in 2010. Due to fast response and weekly medical visits I am so thankful to say that she is still with us. BUT the fight for her life is no where near over. This eating disorder has taken her freedom to be a happy teen.
