The U.S. House of Representatives: Renew the Assault Weapons Ban Now

As the nation grieves and mourns the loss of 20 innocent schoolchildren and 6 educators in this most recent act of gun violence, now more than ever is the time for grassroots action.  The Connecticut shooting must be the tipping point for political leadership on common sense gun law reform.  FINALLY, the White House is considering a renewal of the assault weapons ban.  Under Obama's presidency there have been far too many gun massacres.  Tell Congress and Obama to put a bill to vote now!

Since the assault weapons ban expired in 2004, this country has endured several senseless massacres that tear at the fabric of our nation -- Virginia Tech, Tuscon AZ, Aurora CO, and now Newtown Connecticut shooting. Just this April, Mexican President Calderon urged President Obama to push Congress to revive the ban on assault weapons in the U.S. “The expiring of the assault weapons ban in the year 2004 coincided almost exactly with the beginning of the harshest -- the harshest -- period of violence we've ever seen,” Calderon said at the White House news conference in April 2012.

There is overwhelming public opinion in favor of gun control laws and bi-partisan efforts have been made to revive the ban on assault weapons under federal law. In 2007, an ABC News poll revealed that 67% of Americans favor a federal ban on assault weapons.  Yet, the gun lobby is so exceedingly powerful, particularly in swing state voting districts, that it is like the 3rd rail in Congress.  This petition aims to tell our leaders it's time to LEAD on an issue that is entirely within the public interest of the real people of this country irregardless of party.

This petition is important to stand up against the special interest gun lobby and behind leaders in Congress who will and have in the past pursued a revival of the federal assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004 under a sunset provision. Efforts in 2007 and 2008 by U.S. House Democrats and Republicans never made it to a vote on the floor. This petition is force our representatives to publicly take a stand on this issue! Calling on all members of Congress to answer - What will you do to revive the federal ban on assault weapons now?

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is asking a team led by Vice President Joe Biden to offer ‘‘concrete proposals’’ to curb gun violence no later than January, in the aftermath of the horrific massacre at a Connecticut elementary school.

Obama says after he receives recommendations from Biden’s group, he will push legislation ‘‘without delay.’’ The president is urging Congress to hold votes on the bill.

Obama says the issue is complex but quote, ‘‘we have a deep obligation — all of us — to try.’’

Biden, a longtime gun control advocate, will lead a team that will include members of Obama’s administration and outside groups.

The move comes after Friday’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. Twenty children and six adults were killed at the school by a gunman wielding a semi-automatic rifle.

The second amendment was meant for ITs time. We need to think of OUR time and our families. Only the military needs to assault something with this type of weapon.

It is absolutely ridiculous for a private individual to own an assault weapon. The purpose of the gun is to tear your target to shreds. No good can come from it. Say a crazy person gets a revolver - there's only so many people he/she can hurt/kill before needing to reload and hopefully be stopped. With an assault rifle you can take out a whole crowd. No one *needs* an assault rifle. Please, please, please ban them!

Assault weapons should not be available to normal citizens. They should only be used by military or police. Not even a hunter or sportsman need such weapons. Also, please insititute background checks for all guns. If a test is given to drive a car why can't measures be taken to ensure guns are placed only in the hands of people without mental issues or criminal records - thank you.
