TOC Councilman Jack Smith-Citizen of the Year in 2010 steps into the story!
Town Of Cary Councilman, Jack Smith offers his opinion on the CHS water tower. He was not a graduate of Cary High School, having moved to Cary in 1986. http://carycitizen.com/2010/11/09/citizen-of-the-year-jack-smith/
Speaking to the Cary News, “The last thing you want to do is have a rusted piece of metal sitting there, and then you’re going to be spending thousands on Rust-Oleum,” said Smith, who has served on the council for more than 20 years. “The solution is not to save the water tower.”
"He noted the town only started painting the tower in the 1980s to stop students from illegally doing it themselves. That fact, he said, shouldn’t obligate the town to maintain the structure indefinitely." http://www.carynews.com/2013/01/2
So, he turns the story from history, tradition, and intrigue to vandelism, criminal activity, wasted money, and rust buckets!
I spoke of the legend of the tower my interview, saying that the Town of Cary will prove themselves heroes or villains. hmmm
