Our police protectors are shooting our family pets. They say that the dog was acting aggressive towards them, when witnesses completely disagree. We need to act now - I have read at least 14 cases of dog killings in the last 1 1/2 - 2 months. And I am pretty sure, I missed some. We need to protect our beloved family members. We need to make sure that the law holds the police to the same standards as they hold the common public to.  Help us bring about change and protect all members of our families. Here are just a few examples of the horrendous acts of cowardice committed by our police forces.

This 5 month old puppy was shot 7 times trying to get home to his parents.

http://greenheritagenews.com/no-comment-friendly-pit-bull-shot-dead-by-cop-in-north-carolina/ - this is Megan and her dog Big Daddy. He was shot on his front porch, and the policeman picked up his casings, so there is no proof of where he was standing when he shot this beloved family member.

This was a beautiful deaf pitt bull named Ice who was shot in "error". By a police officer again.

This family member was shot because he was walking next to his mama, but off of his leash - he went to greet a passing officer and was shot

https://www.facebook.com/JusticeForCisco - On April 14, 2012 Michael Paxton's best friend Cisco, an Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler), was gunned down by an APD officer that responded to the wrong address of a domestic disturbance complaint.

https://www.facebook.com/MocosLastWish - On March 29th, our beloved animal and family member Moco, a boxer, was shot and killed by an Ojai Police Officer. The officers were responding to a call for vehicle tampering. The call was not made by us nor did we have any involvement.

https://www.facebook.com/JusticeforBucky - On Tuesday October 4, 2011 our beloved Bucky a dachshund mix, was shot 5 times and killed by an Arlington Police Officer! Bucky was my autistic sons theraputic dog and his best friend!

There are so very many more - Remi, Rosie, Ace, Ice, Shadow, Roscoe Harrison, Diablo, Capone, Chooch, Humphrey Bogart, Melmo (who was chained and still shot 6 times), Shelby, Neko, Copper, Daisy, Elvis, Chompers, Daisy, Fluppy, Mama, Cinnamon, Snoop, Athena, Peyton, Chase, Rocko, Alted, Girl, Elko, Ace (dif from above Ace), Sadie, Rufus, Indo, Skye, Ava and so very very many more!  - Some of the videos are honestly way to graphic to post for the public, as I am not aware of the ages of the viewers of the petition.

Please, create a law regulating the use of deadly force against our family pets.  Help us to protect our families - protect our freedoms - protect our lives.

Thank you

    4. 75 Yr Old Grandmother Held Down At Gunpoint As Police Shoot & Kill Her Dog

      Lisa Byrd
      Petition Organizer

On August 15th, 2012, the Wayne County police in the town of Ontario, NY, killed my dog, DUKE, right in the house with a shotgun. The police had a warrant and supposedly this was a drug raid, but nobody was arrested.
The dog never even barked, yet I heard one of them say, "He's aggressive, shoot him".  I'll never forget the sound of that gunshot and the blood flying everywhere. They did all this while forcing me to lay on the bathroom floor, screaming at me to stay down, and holding me at gunpoint.  I couldn't get up if I wanted to. I'm 75 years old, had three strokes and knee replacement, and can hardly walk.  There was nothing I could do to help my pet.
They killed my dog for no reason.  This was the sweetest and most gentle animal anyone could want. They shot him with a shotgun in such a manner that he ran around in pain and bled all over the house and suffered a slow, cruel death.  There was no reason for this kind of treatment!

China, the pit bull who was shot by an Albemarle County police officer on Monday, has been released from the vet but has lost one of her legs.
Her owners are still wondering how the whole situation transpired.
China, a 2-year-old dog who was released from the vet on Friday, has had a tough week since Monday's events when she was shot in the leg by a police officer after reportedly attacking another dog.
They said they did not even know if she was alive at first after they heard gun shots behind their house on Monday.
"The officer never even had the decency to let me know she was still alive, even after seeing me throw myself to the ground and start crying," Lauren Fox said.
They both say China has been to doggy day care, and has always been friendly and loving.
Albemarle Police say the officer who fired the gun is still on active duty, but the situation is under review.

BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - When Rita Hairston's husband died five years ago, she adopted a dog to keep her company and help her through an emotional time.
Prada was 5-years-old at the time. The black Labrador Retriever became more than a pet, but a part of Hairston's family. A companion.
Last Saturday morning, she returned to her E. Morris Ave. house in University Heights in Buffalo and discovered her home had been broken into and Prada was missing.
There was a puddle of blood on the floor and bullet holes in the door of a bedroom where Prada slept.

      AUGUST 31, 2012
FREMONT (CBS SF) - A dog was shot and injured Thursday night after officers responded to an alleged burglary in progress at a Fremont home that turned out to be a false report made by a teenage neighbor, a police detective said.
Around 8:15 p.m., someone called police about a break-in at a home on Trout Court, the caller told police two juveniles were coming out of his neighbor’s house with a lot of bags.
Police arrived and searched for possible suspects near the home when they were approached by three pit bulls that forced open a gate and charged at the officers, according to police. The officers retreated and the dogs aggressively pursued them, one of the officers then opened fire, hitting one of the dogs.
Following the gunfire, one dog fled back into the yard, while the two others—including the injured dog—ran off and have not been seen since.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- While deputies with the Jacksonville and Clay County Sheriff's Offices were serving an arrest warrant on Jacksonville's Westside Friday morning, a JSO deputy shot and killed a pit bull.
Police were serving the warrant Wednesday morning at a home in the 5200 block of Alpha Avenue.
They were there to serve a warrant for failure to appear in court in Clay County, according to JSO Lieutenant Derrick Mitchell.
A dog at the home lunged at the officers and when it did, one of the JSO deputies shot it, killing the dog.
Lt. Mitchell said the suspect was not at the home. Police are still trying to locate him

A Thornton, Colo. family is grieving the untimely and violent demise of their dog, "Scar," who was shot and killed on Sunday.
According to Monday's publication of KDVR News, Thornton police were chasing after a man who was wanted on a misdemeanor drug charge.
In the midst of the chase, an officer encountered Scar, an American bulldog mix, and opened fire.
Witnesses to the shooting claim that the 8-year-old dog was standing in his own yard when the officer shot him. (and of course the) Police offer a different version, claiming that the dog charged off of the property at the officer, and that the shooting was in self-defense.

    10. Burton police shoot dog; resident, officials provide differing accounts

BURTON, MI -- Three sides are offering different accounts of the same incident revolving around a Burton police officer firing his weapon June 17 and striking a five-year-old Rottweiler dog outside an Adams Street home. Burton resident Jennifer Smith and her boyfriend Jason Martin, of Dowagiac, said their dog Shadow would never hurt anyone.
But police stated it was chasing after a person and the officer used appropriate force when the dog was shot. The officer had tried to contact Genesee County Animal Control, police said.
Animal Control arrived after the dog was shot.

“I heard the gunshot and I heard her yelping and scratching at the front door. As I opened the door, she was gone. (The officer) has his gun drawn,” Martin said. “There was so much blood on the porch and front door…I thought she was dead. I said, 'you shot my dog.'”

On the morning of July 25 ,2012 I was suddenly woken by gun shots at about 8:30 in the morning. I got out of bed, threw clothes on, and went to the door. I saw a police officer getting in his car. When I opened the door, the officer walked over & starting telling what happened. He informed me that the neighbors called animal control because my dog was in their yard, "acting aggressive." As he was explaining this, we were walking to my front yard. I looked over & saw my sweet baby boy dead - shot to death!
Our neighbor reported that the officer parked his truck in my drive way, & got out of the vehicle. As he was exiting the vehicle, he saw Cash running across the pasture from the neighbor's house towards my house. The officer had a long time to get back in his vehicle, instead he stepped foward took his stance. He drew his gun, sited in on Cash, & when he got close enough, the officer shot him! All of the shots were side entry wounds. He murdered my dog, my protector, my friend!

This happened on July 18, sorry I got the stories out of order! I do have to say that Aubies owners were arrested for having and possibly dealing marijuana. THAT DOES NOT GIVE THE POLICE THE RIGHT TO SHOOT THE FAMILY PET!! If you go to the facebook page, Justice for Aubie, you will see Aubie with an infant. This was not an aggressive dog - unfortunately, you will also see extreme photos, where I doubt, this poor baby was shot just once! This is just absolutely sickening. I can say no more - there is no more to say, except this HAS TO STOP! ! ! I have a sign on my front door, dogs inside, please do not shoot! It shouldn't have to come to that!

Another dog shot on the 25th. There is not a week that goes by without at least one pet being shot! This time the police just walked into an open apartment looking for a man with a warrant, it doesn't say if they were even at the "wanted" mans apartment, just walked in an open door. Then shot the dog, which was a rottweiler, who was in HIS OWN HOME, after he objected to strangers walking in. Obviously the dog was well behaved or he would have left thru the open door! No news on how he is, he was taken for treatment for his injuries.

DANVILLE -- Danville's police chief says one of his officers acted properly by shooting and killing an 11-year-old miniature dachshund that ran at him while growling. Neighbors said Killer, who died Monday night after being shot once, was a sweet, mild-mannered dog. "He just kind of walked up and down the neighborhood and didn't bother anybody," said Jenine Edmunds, who lives on the same cul-de-sac as Killer's owners, Tawaiin Harper and his family. "He was just a little house dog."
Police Chief Philip Broadfoot declined to name the officer who shot and killed the dog while serving two outstanding warrants to a neighbor. As the officer returned to his car, "he was surprised by a growling dog running through the yard directly at him from the rear, leaving him with just seconds to consider his options," according to the a release from Broadfoot. "Shooting a dog which is actively presenting a threat to an officer is within the department's policy," according to the release.

There has been FOUR - count them FOUR! ! dog shootings within the last WEEK! !
The bullet entered the dog’s skull near the right eye but did not enter his brain, exiting near his ear.

The dog’s owner, Richelle Nice, told The Palo Alto Daily Post that the dog, Mister, has no history of violent behavior but has been known to bark. Nice owns a second dog, Hayze, which was involved in the incident but was not shot.
“They will bark, but that’s all they do,…He’s not vicious,” Nice told the Daily Post.
Nice told the newspaper that her son woke her up when he discovered the dog with blood running down its face.
“I just saw all this blood all over the porch,” Nice said. “When I went back there he looked at me like, ‘What did I do wrong, mom?’”
Mister was taken to the South Peninsula Veterinary Emergency Clinic for treatment.

“He could have suffered brain damage. He was just lucky the bullet came back out,” clinic Dr. John Thelen told the Daily Post.

Dr. Thelen described the dog as friendly,

This is Fat Man. He was brutally gunned down by the police in his own yard. The three dogs that reside in the house were outside going potty for bedtime, amongst the chaos of illegal fireworks being set off in a yard attached to ours the dogs became frightened there was a small scuffle at which time a neighbor called the local police department. By the time the police arrived my mother already had the dogs broken up and on their way back into the house. When the officer arrived he didnt ask any questions before he began shooting. My mother saw him pointing his gun and begged him not to shoot Fat Man and told him that she had it under control, he also raised his gun to one of the other dogs that was already on the porch. Fat Man started to walk to the porch(which is away from the officer) and the officer opened fire. He was not a threat and he didn't start the scuffle. He may have been a dog but he was like a son to me!!!!! By Amanda Washburn

CONTINUED - while campaigning so I know one should be cautious when approaching dogs in their yards. Most are friendly and welcoming and if not you just back out and leave. This, however, is a different situation if the officer is investigating or serving a warrent as they need to do their job. There is not always a clear line between officer safety and over-reaction. That is where training and good judgement is so important.

I will call the Police Acadamy and see what their training is like concerning dogs. That would be the logical place to do the training as all officers end up going there for training in Idaho. I will also ask how they deal with lethal shootings of pets.

Thank you for the msg concerning the shooting of pets specifically, it seems, of dogs by law enforcement. We have a Springer Spaniel that is aggressive towards anyone who gets close to his vehicle when he is in it. He basically growls but has never offered to bite anyone from the car. I can see if an officer approached he might think this is an agressive dog. This should not be a shooting offense.
I have seen instances in the paper where I think officers have shot too soon & too many times. So I think your petition has some merit, if only to include some basic training in handling dog situations for police trainees. I would think that this should be standard & should be taught by individuals who are familiar with dogs & their behavior. There is a right way to deal with them without endangering the officer. The hard part will be to get any teeth into the law because it deals with a judgement call. I have been bitten by a dog while campaigning so I know on - continued

      Dear Ms. Schor:

Thank you for your message. Issues related to conduct unbecoming a law enforcement officer and/or not justified in statute should be handled at the municipal level. Local police officers and the police chief work for a mayor, township board of supervisors or borough council. Their individual conduct is subject to evaluation and disciplinary action by their employer.

there are so many other ways to handle the dog other than killing a family pet. laws need to be changed, our officers need to be trained and equipped with something to subdue an animal not kill it..

People need to be made accountable for their actions and crimes they commit against animals. these are living beautiful souls that depend on us to care and protect them. if a human would be prosecuted as if the crime were committed against a child it has a chance to stop some of the violence and truly make a difference. Laws need to be stronger! protect our animals, no one deserves to get away with murder. Crimes need to be dealt with accordingly!

Because I live in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. Our police shot a dog 8 times then drug a limping, suffering dog and threw it in their truck. The let bleed out. A neighbor called the police over a barking dog. 3 officers cornered the dog and the dog tried to protect itself. Police feared their lives against a 45 lb dog. They should have tried other methods first. Badges and guns killing ours pets has to stop.

This is for Lexie, this is for the countless other animals who are killed by law enforcement over reacting. It is time to start using the MACE you carry around. It is affective on bears too, I am sure if it can hand a 400lb bear then a family dog will be no problem.
