Fully Fund Lead Poisoning Prevention in US 2012 Budget

The fund for lead-poisoning prevention was almost entirely eliminated, a 94% cut! Once a child is poisoned by toxic lead, permanent brain damage reduces I.Q., lowers grades in school, and diminishes self-control. This, in turn, can lead to frustration, a sense of failure, impulsiveness, aggression, and, for some, potentially even violence, crime, and prison.

Preventing and limiting the damage early will cost our health care system less on a long term basis. The funding is necessary to enforce the regulations that allow for us to obtain batement of lead and relocate children with high lelvels of lead, limiting further exposure and damage.

If this isn't the governments job, what is? Not to mention that the pay back appears to huge even in purely financial terms.

I have been a lead/Risk ASSESOR for the last 22 years.I like to add that the wealty, even if residing in mansions have what was considered the best at the time, simply cause they wanted the best,so contracters use to even add more lead to their 5 gallon drums.

I am a 73 year old female with lead poisoning. I began getting sick around age 60 and it took 6 years for a correct diagnosis. It took a doctor that specialized in treating children with Autism to figure it out. I am still in treatment and my levels have only dropped from 49 ppb to 23 ppb.

Linda Block is the only person I have come across in the United States that seems to care about this problem.

I have worked for almost 8 years trying to prevent lead poisoning- from educating medical providers about testing children to informing parents about the myriad sources of lead to teaching contractors how to work safey. Every day I am saving IQ points of children by educating parents and inspecting homes. After much anticipation, my program received a grant from CDC (who has funded us from our start back in 1997) to expand to be a more wholistic healthy-home program. This was met with much head nodding and excitement from community partners who understand the logic of working together to rid homes of not just lead hazards, but any health or safety threat. Our work saves our society much money in the long run - it is short sighted and not financially advisable to eliminate such a practical and important program!
