We appeal your sense of justice and humanity to release Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr as soon as possible he is weak and suffering from a bullet wound. We believe in freedom of speech. Sheikh Nimar al-Nimr was exercising his inalienable human right to achieve freedom. There is no reason to shoot people for speaking. It will never achieve a productive result.

Saudi activist assured that prominent cleric Sheikh Nimr Nimr was being tortured by the Saudi authorities.

Opposition activist Dr. Hamza al-Hassan said that the “health situation of Sheikh Nimr is not good,” adding that the Sheikh had facial bruise and his teeth were broken.

On his account on Twitter, Dr. al-Hassan said that some members of Sheikh Nimr’s family had visited him in his detention.

He added that the visit was after a call by the Saudi authorities. However it was brief in which the visitors could talk to him nothing but some general statements, al-Hassan said.

He noted that the authorities demanded that family of the Sheikh calm the angry protesters, adding: “this is the aim of the visit.”

Meanwhile, the Saudi Rasid news network reported that Sheikh Nimr’s family had visited him in the military hospital of Zahran, where he is being treated after being injured by gunshots during detention last week.

Criticism of Saudi Arabia’s heavy handedness was not limited to Shiite circles, however. The lead editorial of Al-Quds Al-Arabi Tuesday placed the Saudi regime in the same category as other “Arab Spring” dictators oppressing peaceful demonstrations.

“Clearly, Saudi authorities — like all other Arab governments — will not take this protest wave lightly. They will crush them with force. The proof of this is that security forces did not hesitate to use live ammunition against the protesters in Qatif.”

The World Shia Forum (WSF) expresses its deepest concern and condemnation of brutal shooting and arrest of Saudi Arabia’s top Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr Al-Nimr. The episode reminds us of the brutal arrest and subsequent execution of Shia Hazara leader Ayatullah Abdul Ali Mazari by the Taliban regime in 1995.

According to his family and rights groups in Qatif, Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr was arrested in the Sunni-Wahhabi-ruled kingdom’s eastern province on Sunday. His arrest and injury has been confirmed by the Saudi government.

Nimr’s arrest was announced earlier by his brother and a Shiite advocacy group. “The police carried out an ambush in Al-Awamiya, intercepting my brother’s car and arresting him,” Mohammed Nimr said. “On learning the news, I went to the place and found the empty car,” he added.
