At the Eliot K-8 School, which is part of the Boston Public School System, there are 320 students currently enrolled, and a wait list of more than 400 children. Schools all across Boston are crowded; providing more space for one school alleviates pressure in other schools, potentially opening up seats in a school near you.
In the last two years, students have boasted significant improvements in learning, with double digit increases in the percentage of students passing and achieving proficiency in the MCAS, across all grade levels and in nearly every subject.
In response to increased demand in the downtown area, the Eliot added a second Pre-K class in 2008, so more families could take advantage of the rapidly improving school. Each pursuing year, additional classroom space is needed to accommodate both this 2008 Pre-K class as it moves toward Grade 8, as well as the two classes at each grade level that move up behind it. In September 2012, the double-strand of classes will reach the Third Grade, so additional space will be needed each year until these students graduate.
Currently, there is no more room to house all these students, and there is no written plan as to how the Eliot School will function under this tremendous strain.
We urge you to support our request to the City of Boston to resolve our crisis of space! Please sign in support.
We would be grateful if you could help us make a difference by forwarding this to your spouse, significant other, friends and neighbors. EVERY signature counts. With students coming from the North End, Beacon Hill, East Boston, Back Bay, Bay Village, the Leather District, Charlestown, Allston, Brighton, South End, Dorchester, the West End, and Downtown - solving this problem would truly positively impact families all over the City of Boston.
