The Easton Police Department: Keep the Easton Police K9 program active once K9 Chase is retired 6/2013

For the past ten years the Town of Easton Connecticut residents have been kept safe by a dedicated police officer and her K9 partner. Ofc Tamra French and K9 Chase have been patrolling the streets of Easton since 2003 on the evening shift. This awesome K9 Team have located missing people, fleeing suspects, evidence of crimes, various drugs and even dangerous weapons. They are also committed to the youth of Easton by performing demonstrations to teach them about the great things K9 Chase can do.

The Easton Police is the smallest police department in Connecticut that has a K9 program. There are typically only two officers working a shift in the vast rural Town of Easton. Every call for service that Ofc French goes on K9 Chase is right there with her.

In March 2009, Ofc French and another officer responded to an emergency call for a violent domestic situation. After arriving there they quickly determined that one victim had been assaulted with a knife. The suspect then began to attack the two officers. K9 Chase was deployed to apprehend the suspect at which time the suspect began fighting with K9 Chase. During the violent struggle Ofc French and the other officer received multiple injuries. K9 Chase fought valiantly and received four herniated discs during the incident. Having K9 Chase on scene to assist in this violent incident possibly prevented officers from having to use deadly force on the suspect.
K9 Chase is now twelve years old and will be retiring on June 30, 2013. In a recent news article in the Easton Courier, Easton Police Chief James Candee said after K9 Chase retires he will NOT be replacing him with another dog. Chief Candee suggested that the Easton Police can rely on K9 teams from surrounding towns. If your child gets lost in the woods, do you want to wait for a K9 Unit to be called in from another town? Or would you prefer that your police department has a K9 Unit at the ready. Having a police K9 and officer that knows the town is most beneficial.

Please join the Friends of Easton Police K9 change the Easton Police Department's decision to terminate the beloved and vital K9 Program and replace K9 Chase when he retires with dignity on June 30th.

My son is a officer in calif. That has had the privelage of working with k-9s, I think they are an important part of police work and help insure officers safety, they deserve the same respect!

I am signing this petition for the safety of the citizens of Easton and the surrounding communities who have benefited from the Easton police K9 program. K9 Chase has been an asset to your community and his legacy of service should be allowed to continue in the form of a new K-9 unit. You won't know what you have lost until it's to late, then you'll kick yourselves for having lost it in the first place.

The Easton police chief is being cheap, plus K9 Chase has done his job. To kill the unit because the only K9 officer had to retire was ridiculous.
