Abolish the SSAF

    1. Petition by

      Matthew Mckenzie

We the Undersigned support the UWA Student Guild's opposition to the Student Services and Ammenities Fee.

Many students work part time, live in regional areas, or study away from their main campus. They don’t get the same benefits out of the fee that other students do. The fee hits struggling students the hardest, whilst bringing most benefit to those students who are well off.

Students should be able to decide where their money goes. If the revenue is being spent on services we won’t use, we shouldn’t be made to pay for them.

The Guild exists to lobby the University on behalf of students.

For many Student Associations, this will become much more difficult with the SSAF in place, as Universities now control their major revenue stream.

For these reasons, we call on the Government to take action to oppose this Fee.

I'd be willing to pay the fee and have no real concern about it, but I feel the fact that it is compulsory is unnecessary and I disagree with it.

I live far from uni and spend little time on campus. The only time this even slightly applies to me are the 3-5 times a semester i visit the ref.

As a student living without the financial imput of my parents, working to pay rent and bills, as well as buy groceries receiving a most minimal amount of centrelink ($32 a fortnight) because my brother doesnt study the SSAF is a fee that I cannot afford to pay. I receive no benefit from paying the SSAF as the only reason I go to uni is to attend my classes. I am not a member of the Guild, and do not utilise any recreational resources on campus.

I pay for my courses and that is all I should be expected to pay.

Also, the idea that I cannot access my results unless the fee has been paid is ludicrous. I pay $2000 a year to receive results and the SSAF should not be a determinant in that. Abolish the SSAF.
