Stop the remodel and renovation of Interlochen's cabin facilities.

    1. Petition by

      Reggie Brown

      Stanford, CA

When Joseph Maddy opened the Interlochen Arts Camp in 1928 he did so with the desire to create and honor a rich tradition of intellectual and creative exploration in the arts. Interlochen's own motto, dedicating its purpose to the promotion of world freedom through the universal language of the arts, celebrates and illuminates the goals of this rich tradition. By resolving to renovate and remodel the camp's cabin facilities, Jeffrey Kimpton and the member's of Interlochen's administration have contradicted the core values that Joe Maddy lived for. By signing the above petition we acknowledge that Interlochen is a place where tradition is a keystone value and deem these changes unacceptable.

The cabins at Interlochen, mean the world to the campers. Sure the bathrooms might be outdated. But it is the signatures, and the history of all that have been through those cabins that makes it such an important part of the Interlochen experience. Being a one year camper, and a three year High school alum, it would be a sad day at interlochen to see all those memories be torn down.

For many people, signing their names in those cabins was the equivalent to signing their names into Interlochen's history. It made the experience a personal one and created a permanent (or so we thought) record of our commitment to being an outstanding artist and to the experiences lived on that campus. At every commencement speech, students are reminded to never forget Interlochen and our education could you simply erase the alum from Interlochen? We haven't forgotten you, but it seems Interlochen is more than ready to forget us. Don't break the bond.

I spent all 4 summers of high school at IAC, made life-long friends, and it is because of my time there that I have become a professional singer. I still have dreams about IAC and wonderful memories, which include cabin life and the tradition of writing on the walls. I haven't been back in 15 years, but when I do make it back, I know exactly where to look in teach cabin for my signature. It would be heartbreaking if all that history is erased.

As an Interlochen alumni from the 70's, I would hope that upon any visit to camp, I could see the names of myself and my friends on our cabins. Please don't remove this vital history. Interlochen is a beautiful place, but it is the people and talent that make it so.

I believe the history and tradition that was built by what each camper left behind should be honored and sustained. Find a way to renovate without destroying the memories of all who attended this fabulous institution.
