Debbie Leverance: The wackadoodles voted down the first bill, but wiser heads prevailed. Strike everything, and HB 2425 passed! Awaiting governor's signature.

HB2047 allows the state to transition from the AIMS test to a new and improved assessment that will be aligned to the Common Core standards, which are already being taught in schools. The AIMS test is a low bar assessment that failed to indicate whether our students were actually prepared to succeed in college or a career. It doesn't make any sense to continue using this assessment when it's not what teachers are now teaching in schools. This isn't fair for students, their families or educators.

Arizona has voluntarily been in the process of adopting better standards for our students over the past 15 years, through the course of public hearings and with public input. The Common Core standards are more rigorous and much better aligned with the best in the nation and the world. They are moving our students to being better prepared to compete in a global economy. Local educators have and will continue to decide HOW to teach standards, including selecting textbooks, curricula, and methods of instruction. In fact, school boards and teachers support the new standards because they are MORE empowered to make good decisions for their students than they were with the AIMS.

Schools across Arizona are already two years in to implementing Common Core standards, with full implementation required next year. We now need to adopt an aligned assessment to ensure that our students are learning and on track to succeeding.

HB2047 will allow us to do that. I urge you to support HB2047 and help Arizona's students receive a world-class education.

The common core standards are going to universal address the academic growth of students nation wide. These will build the independent skills of higher level thinking for all students and better prepare them for the world wide job market.

We need to support the adoption of common core standards, not stop them! We need to bring our education system into the twenty first century. Does Arizona always have to lag behind? We cannot brag about our old system. Let's make it better, listen to our educators and support implementation, including testing!

Our children will need to be competitive in a global economy and need the educational tools to achieve that.

It is obvious Arizona is failing when it comes to educating our children. It is time to take action and stop talking about it.
