Tell the Tennessee House to Vote Against Voter Suppression Legislation

    1. Petition by

      TENNESSEE EQUALITY PROJECT

On Wednesday, March 2, the House General Sub-committee of State and Local Government deferred legislation that will suppress voting in Tennessee. But this legislation returns to the subcommittee’s agenda on Wednesday, March 9.

HB0007 will require Tennessee citizens to present photo identification before voting in elections.

The proposed bill will create extra hassles for many citizens without a photo ID when voting, including people who are poor, elderly, transgender or those who have religious objections to being photographed. HB0007 may force some citizens to complete extra paperwork not currently required and raises the risk of harassment and disenfranchisement of such voters.

Requiring photo ID also creates a poll tax reminiscent of Jim Crow days in the South. Aren’t we past disenfranchising voters in the South?

Voter turnout is already low in Tennessee. The state does not need to create extra barriers that make it harder to vote in Tennessee elections.

Tell the House State & Local Government Committee to vote against HB0007 and HB0402.

If you live in the district of a Representative serving on House General Sub-committee of State and Local Government, telephone him or her today and encourage them to vote no on HB0007 (Click the House members on the link in this sentence for phone numbers). Then send a message through this petition to the entire committee encouraging them to vote no.

Not every qualified voter has a photo ID and would place an burden on those who don't drive. The non-issue of requiring a photo ID in addition to a voter registration card is a waste of the government's time and taxpayer money. Get on with the more important business of health care and the economy.

What of older citizens who no longer have photo id's? When did being older and having served in the military and being a taxpayer mean your access to voting should be limited? I have a driverrs license, my mother and father don't have a photo DL. They were told they did not need one. Nice bait and switch tatics.
