On any given day, over 10,000 youth are detained or confined in adult jails and prisons where they are at the greatest risk of sexual assault of all inmates.
According to research by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 21% and 13% of all substantiated victims of inmate-on-inmate sexual violence in jails in 2005 and 2006 respectively were youth under the age of 18. Research also shows that youth are 36 times more likely to commit suicide in an adult jail than in a juvenile detention facility.
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has proposed regulations on the implementation of PREA and through the regulatory process, the Obama Administration through the U.S. Attorney General has an opportunity to end the sexual assault and rape of youth in adult jails and prisons by issuing a ban on placing youth in adult jails and prisons.
Take action now to tell the President to end the rape and sexual assault of youth by issuing a ban on placing youth in adult jails and prisons in the final Prison Rape Elimination Act regulations.
