The idea that only men can be president is offensive and wrong.

As a candidate for national office, Rick Santorum is responsible for policy statements by his staff.

Last June, one of Rick Santorum's campaign staffer sent him an email that stated that having a female president would pose a threat to children because it was against God's will "to have a woman rule the institutions of the family, the church, and the state." It's clear that the notion that children would be harmed by a female president is not only absurd but harmful.

Yet, despite calls to do so, Santorum has not denounced the notion that it would be wrong for a woman to be president.

Tell Rick Santorum: The idea that only men should be president is offensive and wrong--denounce your campaign's message immediately.

Misogynistic lies are harmful when anyone spreads them. But Rick Santorum is a national figure and a serious candidate for the Republican nomination for president--his campaign has the ability to reach millions of people with their messages every day.

By declining to repudiate the sexist statement of his staffer, he is sending the message to women and girls across the country that they can't be anything they want to be, that they shouldn't "rule the institutions of the family, the church, and the state," and that they shouldn't enjoy the same freedom to choose their profession as men.

Tell Rick Santorum: The idea that only men should be president is offensive and wrong--denounce your campaign's message immediately.

Rick Santorum is known for his conservative social positions on women's issues. He is staunchly anti-choice and recently said that states should have the ability to ban birth control. But implicitly supporting the notion that women should be banned from elective office "because it is against God's will" is simply beyond the pale.

We have fought for decades for the right of women to hold leadership positions in the public and private spheres and to convince the public that a woman can and should be president. And Rick Santorum has the responsibility to denounce the message of his campaign in order to stop the spread of this harmful sexist lie.

Tell Rick Santorum: The idea that only men should be president is offensive and wrong--denounce your campaign's message immediately.

As a candidate for national office, you are responsible for policy statements by your staff. And by failing to denounce the message that women shouldn't be president or 'rule the institutions of the family, the church, and the state,' you are sending the message to women and girls everywhere that they are only suited to certain professions and shouldn't enjoy the same freedom as men.

Sincerely,
[Your name]

It is absolutely despicable that this reactionary drivel is being spouted by anyone, much less such a public figure.

Rick Santorum is so self important and self righteous. He believes women and men are not equal.

He is so removed and continues to miss the point...don't mess with women!!!!!!

      Big mistake.

Men. What good have MEN done?

      Wage war? Kill? Rape? Destroy?

Only men who are brought up with 'feminine' values--which are truly the qualities of the higher nature of the human race--compassion, mercy, empathy, kindness, a strong mind and strong heart before a strong body, nurturing, and above all LOVE--are suited to run anything.

Macho-man, fundamentalist Christian, misogynist pigs like Santorum, who obviously think that men are superior because women are supposedly more 'gentle' and 'kind' and men are 'strong' and 'hard' and 'mean' and 'oppressive'--they have NO PLACE within the universe.

      It is time for changes.
