Tell Obama and Romney: Where's your plan to end gun violence?

    1. Sponsored by

      Mayors Against Illegal Guns

More than 48,000 Americans will be murdered with guns during the next president’s term.

How can President Obama and Governor Romney face that chilling fact without a plan?

In the aftermath of the Aurora, Colorado shootings, both candidates made moving statements that echoed the sympathy we’re all feeling. But words of condolence are not enough. The time has come for meaningful action.

Join Mayors Against Illegal Guns in calling on the candidates to present their plans to address the daily toll that gun violence takes.

I live in Philadelphia and was held up at gunpoint with a sawed off shotgun. This thug came into a restaurant and threatened all of us. The police showed up after the fact and he was gone. Not surprisingly, he had done this several times before in many local restaurants. Not sure what the answer is to this problem...it is so bad in Philly and Camden, NJ. This petition is needed!

It is time to stop kowtowing to the NRA and their lobbyists. Start with some system that will flag mentally ill folks so they have no right to purchase firearms. The general public does not have a need for AK-47 assault rifles. Only the police (SWAT teams) and the military should have access to assault weapons.

I recently took a look at the number of mass shootings since Columbine in 1999. According to the article I read (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/9414540/A-history-of-mass-shootings-in-the-US-since-Columbine.html) 223 people have been murdered since that fateful day. In 1999 there were three shootings, a total of 30 people killed. After that we averaged a shooting a year until 2007 when there were 4 shootings for a total of 50 people killed. (This does not include the number of lives destroyed or the number of people injured...just lost lives.) Twenty-seven killed in 2008 and fifty dead in 2009. Between 2009 and today there are 32 victims of gun violence. Of course, the damage to our collective psyche is immeasurable as we witness these horrors either as eyewitnesses or from the (dis)comfort of our living rooms. Each news story requires that we react in some way either by a) springing into action or b) hardening the heart and becoming numb to the insanity of these tragedies while convincing ourselves that "guns don't kill, people do."
