Tell Governor Brown to Stop the Dangerous Pesticide Methyl Iodide

The California Department of Pesticide Regulation caved to lobbying pressure from chemical manufacturer Arysta and approved the cancer-causing neurotoxin methyl iodide to be used in California's strawberry fields, which produce more than 80 percent of the nation's strawberries. The health and safety of millions of Americans are at risk.

The scientific concensus of more than 50 top scientists, including five Nobel Laureates and the DPR's own Scientific Review Panel, have concluded that this chemical is far too dangerous to be used in agriculture, and that the protective measures proposed by the DPR are far from adequate to offer protection.

Governor-elect Jerry Brown has a good environmental track record. He can help right this injustice. Sign our petition asking him to enact a moratorium on the dangerous chemical as soon as he takes office, and to enact the recommendations of the Scientific Review Panel.

      Governor Brown,

I realize I am from Michigan, but I respectfully ask you to listen to the scientists in you Review Panel in CA. I teach science to seventh grade students and I do care what happens in your state as well as in ours. We commonly have strawberries from CA in our grocery stores in Michigan.

You have the opportunity to show the scientific community and the citizens in our country that scientific studies are valid and that you want your state to be a leader in eliminating dangerous toxic chemicals from our produce! Please stand up for the citizens of your state and for the rest of the country. You could be the enzymatic jump-start to encourage others in office to make other healthy choices.

      Sincerely, Chris Kelly

Clean water and food is a basic human right, I urge you to ban the use of this toxic chemical which is a danger to consumers and workers. My daughter has a pituitary tumour so I am very aware of the damage neurotoxins cause. The health system cannot be put under further stress by the use of these toxic substances. Please listen to your constituents and not big chemical companies which only care about profits.
