Stop the Banning of Books!

Recently PCEP (Plymouth-Canton Educational Park), the three high schools in the Plymouth-Canton (MI) school district, banned the book "Waterland" by Graham Swift, and will soon decide on whether or not to ban the book "Beloved" by Toni Morrison from its AP English curriculum. The books were included on the reading list of the AP English course and students knew that they were going to reading them ahead of time. The books are being banned because two parents have complained that the books discuss "sex, ghosts, abortion, and they use the lords name in vain."

This issue is extremely important because it has to do with two very important things. Our children and their education, and our Constitution of the United States of America. Banning of books, especially for the reasons of the books discuss "sex, ghosts, abortion, and taking the lords name in vain" is merely a political ploy to keep religion in public schools. This violates First Amendment Rights, as well as jeopardizes the ability for students to learn. Public School should be a place where students can learn and expand their knowledge on all issues, even those that contain ideas that contradict certain views of certain religions.

I love both of these books. Please respect my opinion and the opinion of a lot of other students.

As an educator, I am opposed to the banning of books. It is not the government's role to decide what books its citizens may or may not read.

Views on religion have no place in school or curriculum.
