"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle." - Pierre de Coubertin

The Olympic Games is the international symbol of a coming together of athletes worldwide, under the credo of participation - regardless of gender, race or beliefs.

"Participation" in Syria is not synonymous with these Olympic Values, nor even basic Human Rights.

Bashar Al-Assad's regime continues to meet the struggle of ordinary citizens to live a dignified life with state-sponsored extra-judicial detention, torture and slaughter of men, women and children. After 16 months of protests, the United Nations has estimated that over 13 000 people have been killed, including hundreds of children.

Ahmad Hamsho, 18-year-old nephew of Maher al-Assad, brother of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has been selected to participate in the London Olympics as an equestrian show-jumper. Ahmad is the son of Muhammad Hamcho, persona non grata in the US and EU as early as May 2011 for having bankrolled Bashar Al Assad regime's ruthless repression of peaceful protestors.

Violation of the Fundamental Principles of Olympism

2. "The goal of Olympism is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of man, with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity."

5. "Any form of discrimination with regard to a country or a person on grounds of race, religion, politics, gender or otherwise is incompatible with belonging to the Olympic Movement."

- Ahmad Hamcho's staunch support of his family's brand of repression of basic Human Rights in Syria, based on political opinion, violates 2 of the 6 Fundamental Principles of Olympism.

Concerning the Fédération Equestre Internationale:

The Olympic athelete's aunt, Maher Al Assad's wife, Manal al-Jaadan, is Honorary President of the Syrian Equestrian Federation and it has been reported that funding for the sport may come from Ahmad’s father, Muhammad.

- Due to the close ties between the contestant's family, the funding for the National Federation and the ruling party, interference in the grooming and selection to the Olympic team should be investigated before allowing Ahmad Hamcho to compete.

This is not a core Syria awareness campaign.

It will not stop the death toll from rising, nor heal wounded bodies and souls. But at this point, any pressure on the Assad regime figureheads is essential.

Ahmad will represent his home country of Syria in the Olympic equestrian events at London’s Greenwich Park for the Olympic show jumping.

      stephanie lamy
      Petition Organizer

The deputy head of the Syrian Olympic Committee has told ITV News that he and his team will still travel to London in July to attend the games.

It was reported last week that the head of the Committee, General Mowaffak Joumaa, had been refused a visa to enter Britain.

But speaking to ITV News, Feras Moula, deputy to General Joumaa, said:

"As far as we’re concerned we have not had any contact or official statements from the Olympic committee or the UK authorities in regards to being banned from the Olympic games in London.

"For this reason we will travel to the UK in July to attend the games as planned. We want to make it clear that we are here to represent our athletes and Syria at the Olympic Games in London."

      "Dear members of the IOC,
Ahmad Hamsho, 18-year-old nephew of Maher al-Assad, brother of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has been selected to participate in the London Olympics as an equestrian show-jumper. As you know, Ahmad is the son of Muhammad Hamcho, persona non grata in the US and EU as early as May 2011 for having bankrolled Bashar Al Assad regime's ruthless repression of peaceful protestors.
Yesterday Ahmad renewed his support for the ruthless regime in Damascus, very publicly in UK mainstream media, and in reaction this petition has been started.
I call on you to please consider excluding this person from the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
This is not a core Syria awareness campaign. It will not stop the death toll from rising, nor heal wounded bodies and souls. But at this point, any pressure on the Assad regime figureheads is essential.
Thanking you in advance for not only your incredible work for the IOC, but also any support you can give to this action."

We will be raising awareness through different means such as flashmobs, leaflets, stunts, freebies and much more. You can also contact us on the email below with any further ideas.

We will be releasing shortly a database of events and their areas where we hope to raise awareness.

We currently have several teams from different cities that are co-ordinating with us. Each team will be given a theme such as children, doctors, detainees etc. If you would like to join a team or create your own team then please contact us on britishsolidarityforsyria@gmail.com

I only just came across this today, but I am outraged, after the fact, that the Syria Army, better said, Assad & Co did NOT honour the Olympic Truce & even more sickening, that Maher al-Assad's nephew was allowed to participate in the London 2012 games!

That is simply put, a disgrace & SLAP IN THE FACE TO THE MEMORY OF THE NOW OVER 15,000 DEAD at the hands of HIS FAMILY!

Since you still require 756 signatures, despite the Games being over, it's the moral of this story, that has me signing after the Games & why I will promote this Petition to help you get the last 700+ signatures!

Because to allow this man to compete, whilst such disgusting atrocities are carried out everyday in Syria, flies in the face of everything the Olympics is supposed to stand for.
