Stop shelters from using gas to euthanize, it's inhumane

It is inhuman to these helpless animals. Shelter animals deserve for they're last moments to be humane. These gas chambers are fiiled so full with animals, that some are living through the torture. The use of gas is a slow killer. These animals are yelping, howling& clawing to get out, some become aggressive because of the stress& the chemicals filling they're little bodies. When the gas enters they're bodies it can cause vomiting,  seizures, gasping for every last breath. What if your family pet got away, was unclaimed, would you want to know this is how a part of your family is going to die. There are services out there willing to help educate and train facilities on using humane methods of euthanizing. There are some states that are stopping the use of gas for a method of euthanasia but there are so many more that still need to be stopped. These animals have beating hearts, joy, love, loyalty. They deserve to be treated humane. These animals didn't ask to be on this earth, but they're here, loving unconditionally, wanting to be loved and cared about in return. So until we can figure out how to control over breeding,  lets at least, for now give these animals the respect they deserve in they're last moments, let them know that there are people who love and care for them back.

To:
The use of gas for euthanizing

I think our society needs a huge “Wake-up” call. As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all… a view from the inside if you will.

First off, all of you people who have ever surrendered a pet to a shelter or humane society should be made to work in the “back” of an animal shelter for just one day. Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would stop flagging the ads on Craigslist and help these animals find homes. That puppy you just bought will most likely end up in my shelter when it’s not a cute little puppy anymore. Just so you know there’s a 90% chance that dog will never walk out of the shelter it’s dumped at? Purebred or not! About 25% of all of the dogs that are “owner surrenders” or “strays”, that come into a shelter are purebred dogs.

The most common excuses: “We are moving and we can’t take our dog (or cat).” Really? Or they say, “The dog got bigger than we thought it would”. How big did you think a German Shepherd

Does your pet have a chip, does pet have a tag& collar. What if your pet got out& was picked up& taken into a shelter, what if you were unable to locate your pet. What if that next Friday your pet was put into a gas chamber, crying, being clawed by other scared pets, trying to get out, scratching at the door, until it suffers, trying 2 take it's last breath. They deserve to be treated humanely. That might be someone's family member, a child's happiness& even if that pet is just a shelter pet, they deserve for there last moment's to be peaceful.

3-4 million shelter animals are euthanized every year. The cost of use of carbon monoxide is $4.98 per animal, the cost of EIB (euthanize by injection) is $2.29 per animal. American Humane Association is a leader in training animal professionals on proper EIB techniques.
With EIB the animal will fall asleep, quick and painless. Using a gas chamber to euthanize may cause the animal to convulse, vomit, gasp for air, while clawing and panicing to try and get out, until they gasp for there last breath of air.

    5. Gas is just cruel

Not all animals die in the gas chamber, which means they are subject to this cruelty more than once. It can take 25-30 minutes to end an animals life, EIB (euthanize by injection) only takes 3-5 seconds. When in the gas chamber, the animals lose brain function AFTER there vital organs shut down, causing the animal great distress. EIB causes the animal to lose brain function before vital organs begin to shut down.

Please help stop inhumane euthanuzing. Many states are banning the use of gas chambers, but there are still to many states using gas to euthanize, one state using gas euthanization is to many. Please your signature matters. What if that was your family pet that got lost& was never claimed, wouldn't you want they're last moments to be peaceful.

4-5 million dogs die in shelters every year. thats 11,000 a day, and 1 every 8 seconds. Those are statistics just for dogs, thats not even mentioning the many other shelter animals that are being euthanized by gas. Are shelters are over crowded, but if euthanzing has to be done, these animals deserve to have there last moments be humane. Don't let these poor shelter animals suffer, crying and clawing for there last breaths. EIB (euthanize by injection) is the humane way, the cost is lower for shelters to use EIB and there are many programs that will help the shelters with the tramsition from gas euthanization to EIB. There is no excuse or reason that shelters still need to be using cardon monoxide or carbon dioxide to euthanize, it is torture, it is inhumane, it is cruel, it is shameful. Please your signature DOES make a difference. Help me, to help the remaining states to be banned from using gas to euthanize.

"Animals have survived the gas chamber e.g. Daniel & Grace both of whom have bills named after them, & not to forget Andrea the cat who survived twice!! It is also of note that this IS happening, despite unfathomable resistance, across the US Gas Chambers are becoming a (bad) thing of the past. Advocates will not stop until they are all gone Massachusetts has just passed a great bill for animals part of which bans the use of gas chambers, Alabama banned as of January this year & this week Fairfield Ohio stopped gassing. Suggest perhaps it is better to lead than follow. When euthanasia must be performed in a shelter setting, euthanasia by injection is the only acceptable humane method. In states where shelters have the ability to acquire euthanasia drugs directly, all shelters still using a gas chamber should convert to euthanasia by injection immediately. Where direct licensing is not yet available. Continued on next report....

Please don't take a blind eye to these animals because they are not your animals, or because you think it's just another shelter animal, or you think your one signature can't make a difference. Your signature makes a world of difference to those million of animals that have to suffer those last 25 or more last minutes of their lives. Crying and clawing for their last breath. I know until we find a better solution, due to over population of animals, there are many that will be euthanized. Let it be in a humane way. What if that was your, or your families lost pet that never got claimed. Wouldn't you want their finally moments to be humane.

    13. Please help for a more humane way

      Kara Blanton

I understand that shelters are over crowded, as a result animals are going to be euthanized until we can find a solution. But euthanizing doesn't have to be inhumane. The use of carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide is cruel and the animals have to suffer until they take they're last breath, which can take 25minutes or more. Shelters can use EIB (euthanize by injection), this way an animal does not have to suffer. It is also less in cost for the shelter to use EIB. I am just asking for help to stop the gassing of animals to euthanize, there is a more humane way. That animal could be your lost pet, or friend or families lost pet, that never got claimed.

About 6-8 million animals come into shelters a year, about 3-4million of those are killed because they are unclaimed. These animals are gassed with carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide for 25mins or more. Suffering, crying, howling, scraping to get out, before they're last breath. If cages that go into the gas chamber are filled to full with animals, some animals can suffer through it, doesn't happen often. They're gassed bodies are just thrown into trash bags and discarded. Please help stop the remaining states to ban gassing for euthanizing!

    16. Please Stop The Inhumane Euthanize Gassing To Shelter Animals

      Kara Blanton
      Petition Organizer

The animals are put in cages, still alive. Slid into a chamber that gets filled with carbon monoxide or carbon dioxode. These animals then breath this gas in until they take there last breath. This is not quick nor painless for them.
I understand shelters become over crowded but why not use a more humane way until another solution can be found. EBI (euthanize by injection) this way the animals are not suffering.
