STOP Horse Slaughter in the United States

70% of Americans (Public Opinion Strategies Poll) oppose horse slaughter, and you personally made a campaign promise to permanently ban horse slaughter and exports of horses for human consumption (Mexico and Canada).

During the 2008 campaign you stated: "Federal policy towards animals should respect the dignity of animals and their rightful place as cohabitants of our environment. We should strive to protect animals and their habitats and prevent animal cruelty, exploitation and neglect.... I have consistently been a champion of animal-friendly legislation and policy and would continue to be so once elected." You announced that you had co-sponsored legislation to stop the sale for slaughter of wild free-roaming horses and burros. During the 2008 campaign you signed on as co-sponsor to the bill to ban horse slaughter for human consumption. When asked specifically during the campaign, "Will you support legislation ...to institute a permanent ban on horse slaughter and exports of horses for human consumption", you gave an unqualified "Yes."

Additionally: as Congress and the White House aim to dramatically decrease federal spending, the U.S. Department of Agriculture would have to find the money in its existing budget, or allocate any new money to pay for horse meat inspections, which is said could cost taxpayers $3 million to $5 million a year.

I ask you to please think about what you are doing. The wild horses that you have allowed to be rounded up throughout the Western United States are one of the remaining pieces we have left of American History we have left. These animals should be protected, not slaughtered. We slaughtered the buffalo to the brink of extinction; we cannot afford to do the same with the American Mustang.

As an owner of three wonderful horses, I plead with you to reconsider your position, and ban the slaughter, or export of horses to be slaughtered. Please keep your word, and uphold the promise you made to the American people. This issue will not go overlooked during elections next year, and will only help your campaign. The American public, myself included, will never support any candidate that is a proponent of horse slaughter.

The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today announced in a newly released poll conducted by Lake Research Partners that 80 percent of American voters are opposed to the slaughter of U.S. horses for human consumption. The nationwide survey reveals that Americans oppose horse slaughter overwhelmingly regardless of their gender, political affiliation, whether they live in an urban or rural area, or their geographic location. Further, it confirms that a vast majority of horse owners are also against the slaughtering of our nation's equines.

    4. PENNSYLVANIA FARM FIRES KELSEY LEFEVER FOR SENDING HORSES TO SLAUGHTER!

Lefever is accused of deceiving two horse owners at Penn National racecourse in Grantsville, Pa., by indicating to them she would make every effort to retrain and re-home their retired Thoroughbred racehorses. Within days of Lefever taking possession of the horses (and allegedly receiving $200 and 10 bags of horse feed to care for one of the animals), the four horses were discovered on a trailer owned by kill-buyer Bruce Rotz at the New Holland horse auction in Lancaster County, Pa. The horses were subsequently shipped to a slaughter plant in Quebec, Canada.

In conversations Lefever allegedly had with a friend who was not involved in the criminal charges, Lefever suggested the incident involving the four horses was not isolated. “I killed every one of those f---ing horses, over 120 of them,” she allegedly said to Amy Groninger, who told officials she has known Lefever for about four years.

    5. Horse once destined for slaughter becomes USEF horse of the year

It reads like the trailer for a new movie. Failed racehorse Neville Bardos, an Australian thoroughbred who was written off as a disaster and sent to the slaughterhouse, just became the USEF Horse of the Year.

This story is certainly no movie, but it could be. Neville Bardos, a 13-year-old, 16.1 hh chestnut gelding, is the epitome of equine perseverance. Several equines in history have overcome terrible odds, but this eventing gelding has faced more than his fair share. Having escaped death twice, the thoroughbred's grit was finally rewarded on Jan. 13, when he was named the United States Equestrian Federation’s (USEF) horse of the year for 2011.
