We petition the Staten Island Department of Transportation to make Grymes Hill and Howard Avenue a safer space for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. The high volume of fast-moving traffic and lack of crosswalks, sidewalks, etc. have made it a dangerous place; most tragically, a hit-and-run driver struck and killed Wagner College student R. J. Tillman while he was bicycling on Howard Avenue on February 12, 2012. Grymes Hill is a neighborhood, with four academic campuses. It should not be an automobile speedway. Please make it a priority to ensure the safety of all who are traveling in this area.

Have you seen the bright yellow yard signs that say "Thank you for sharing the road" throughout Grymes Hill? We thank all those who are showing their support for safer roads on Grymes Hill through posting these signs. We are down to about 20 signs and are looking for funds to print more. We are applying for a grant from Change by US NYC. Become a member of this project at the link below -- it will help our cause!

Not only do I ride frequently on Staten Island (and on Howard Ave), but I want to give the message to cyclists that it's safe to ride on S.I. and to the drivers on S.I. that they need to be aware and considerate of cyclists as fellow vehicles sharing their roadways.

I enjoy coming out to Staten Island as a pleasant getaway from this hectic city, but cycling on the Island is still too dangerous in too many places. Now that son Ben is big enough to cycle, I want to bring him with me to Staten Island this summer. So please: make it safer for us and ALL our kids!

Walking and cycling are healthy, clean and rewarding ways to move around the city. If only they could be made safe too.

Please provide protected bikelanes, sidewalks and pedestrian crossings, and (re-)design streets to slow down traffic to safe levels..

Howard Avenue/Hillside avenue great for trained on, but driver turn it into a speedway any thing past 40 MPH, and you can smell the fuel coming out of the tail pipe. slow down, you have to stop the red light any way.
