      WASHINGTON CONSERVATION VOTERS

In the northwest corner of Washington state, county politics are brewing and an obscure election is shaping up to affect not only local residents, but the entire state of Washington – and even the earth's climate.

The outcome of Whatcom County Council’s election this fall could determine how the United States uses its coal and the future of global climate change.

Over the next two years, this seven-member council will vote on two crucial siting permits which, if approved, will allow the construction of a coal terminal in Cherry Point that will transport 48 million tons of coal annually through Washington state’s backyards, communities and waterways. It will pollute our land, air and water; threaten our public health; and perpetuate the world’s dependence on fossil fuels.

Whatcom County can’t stop this climate disaster alone. Join your Washington neighbors and sign this statement of support to show that Washingtonians stand strong against Big Coal.

Coal is the dirtiest fossil fuel – it is bad for our economy, bad for our environment and bad for the climate. And if Big Coal succeeds in building proposed coal terminals in Cherry Point, Washington will be the largest exporter of coal in the nation.

This November, voters will determine the makeup of the council that will make those crucial permit decisions, electing four of the seven members. The local community, along with Washington Conservation Voters is working hard to elect climate champions to these seats.

Our ability to fight this political battle depends entirely on our state standing together with one, loud voice – sign the statement below to show your support for electing climate champions to the Whatcom County Council and fight back against Big Coal!

I stand with Whatcom County residents against the construction of a coal terminal in Cherry Point. We must elect strong climate champions to the Whatcom County Council seats and fight back against Big Coal’s dirty influence.
