South Lyon City Council: Please work to preserve and maintain the Volunteer Park Nature Trails

    1. Petition by

      Volunteer Park Nature Trails

The Volunteer Park Nature Trails are an asset to the entire community of South Lyon. The recent conversion of the park into farmland has destroyed many of the existing trails. The remaining trails provide an opportunity for all residents and visitors to South Lyon Volunteer Park to enjoy a walk through a natural open field and forest environment that is abundant with birds and wildflowers. Please work to preserve and maintain the Volunteer Park Nature Trails.

      Resident wants to save trails

A South Lyon resident has launched a petition drive, created an informational web page and appealed to the City Council to preserve the remaining nature trails at Volunteer Park where a local farmer plowed a portion of the land in exchange for removing junk and brush.

    9. Letter to the Editor of the South Lyon Herald

The South Lyon Volunteer Park Nature Trails are being destroyed by the conversion of the park into farmland. This spring many South Lyon residents and visitors to Volunteer Park (located east of Dixboro Rd between 8 Mile Rd and 9 Mile Rd) have been shocked to see the destruction of the existing marked and previously maintained nature trail system within the park. (The approximately 2 miles of trail loops are visible on images such as Google Maps.) People have contacted the South Lyon City Mayor and Council Members, but no clear explanation has been given as to why approximately 100 acres of natural grass fields and lightly wooded areas have been clear-cut and plowed under.

In past years, I have enjoyed many pleasant walks on the Volunteer Park Nature Trails – often finding wild raspberries to eat or seeing interesting birds or wild flowers. ... see the entire letter at: http://www.vpnt.org/LetterToEditor130429.html

    10. The BEFORE and AFTER -- but some can still be saved

It's pretty sad what one tractor can do... (But we can still save some of the trails -- if we act now!)

If you are interested in participating in a group walk -- please make a post on the Volunteer Park Nature Trails Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/VolunteerParkNatureTrails or send me an e-mail georgefomin@gmail.com

    15. I posted six Petition signs in Volunteer Park today

I'm trying to get the word out about the Volunteer Park Nature Trails. Even though a lot of the trails have been plowed under... it's not too late to save a nice Nature Trail loop in Volunteer Park... Please forward the link to the website for the Volunteer Park Nature Trails (http://www.vptn.org) to anyone you know that would like to see the trails remain in Volunteer Park. Anyone who enjoys the trails can sign the petition...

It is a public park not a private farm.
