SOCO ATX Development: Preserve Austin's food trailers on S. Congress!

    1. Petition by

      Brian Nelligan

      Austin, TX

The food trailers on South Congress Avenue are one of the defining characteristics of Austin's culture. It is a favorite spot to grab a bite to eat for locals and tourists and reinforces the appeal of the shopping venues on S. Congress. Clearing out this Austin landmark to build another hotel would be seriously detrimental to the tourism industry you are seeking to cultivate. Please work toward a solution with the food trailer owners and perhaps the shops of S. Congress.

      Hey guys,

Thanks to everyone who shared the petition we have overachieved by over 1,500 votes so far! One of our signers is contacting the city of Austin to see what measures we may be able to take to protect the trailer owners renting the space. I thought what might help our cause is if we have any business owners, business school graduates, or investors who could propose some sort of business plan to SOCO ATX to develop the trailer lot to be more profitable rather than wasting its potential with yet another hotel. If you have any ideas let me know, we can create a Google group or something to brainstorm together.

      Hello everyone,

I'll try to be brief. Thank you all so much for taking the time to sign this petition and for your passionate comments. As I am writing this we are just 660 signatures short of 5,000. If you could take a moment and share this petition on your facebook and/or twitter I am confident we can reach our goal by midnight tomorrow. Hopefully with this display of dedication SOCO ATX Development will realize what a unique and great investment opportunity the food trailers are.

Also thanks Daily Texan for linking to us in your recent article!

Closing time for the South Congress food trailers - The Daily Texan

Despite the technically temporary nature of the food trailers that reside on the lot between Milton and Monroe Streets on South Congress Avenue, the mobile eateries have become somewhat of an Austin landmark. Visiting tourists from across the country come to sample the smorgasbord of multi-cultural selections the trailers have to offer.

I love the culture and fun feel all the food trucks bring to South Congress. It is a place I love to bring all of my out of town friends in addition to enjoying on a regular basis myself.

This is a cultural icon of Austin. What makes our city so unique is that we HAVE quirky little places like this for tourists. Replacing it with a hotel only continues to make Austin just another Houston or Dallas. "Keep Austin Weird" is a thing of the past.

When I have people visit or when I know people are coming to Austin I tell them amongst many things to do that they must go to S. Congress to the food trailers. Its just one of those things about Austin that gives it the hip, friendly, and people loving appeal it has. Would definitely be a shame if they did not exist.

I really loved that area of independent shops, craft booths, and food trailer. Why change that? :'-(
