Dear Senators Levin and McCain,

We are petitioning you to cut all ties between Rush Limbaugh and the American Forces Network, also known as the Armed Services Network. In your capacity as Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Committe and as Senators, you are in a unique position to contact Secretary Panetta and question him as to the continued presence of a misogynist on military airwaves.

Both of you have listened to testimony about sexual harassment in today's military. You both understand the severe toll that sexual harassment takes on the ability for our current force to its job well. In the first 18 month of the war in Iraq, over 100 cases of sexual assault were reported. Your esteemed colleague, Susan Collins, said at the time, “What does it say about us as a people, as a nation, as the foremost military in the world, when our women soldiers sometimes have more to fear from their fellow soldiers than from the enemy?”

We ask you, our Senators, what does it say about us as a people, as a nation, as the foremost military in the world, that we allow a misogynist daily access to our military airwaves in the name of Free Speech?

We believe the women serving in our military deserve a better atmosphere in which to work. We believe that family, the wives, mothers, and daughters in our military community, deserve it as well.

The freedom to speak freely is a right that military members and their families do not take lightly. In fact, active duty members partially give up that right when they sign the dotted line. It is your responsibility, as Senators and fellow citizens, to speak for all of those who have sworn to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

Please, cut all ties between AFN and Rush Limbaugh immediately. Help stop sexaul harassment in its tracks.

Sincerely,

To:
Senators Carl Levin and John McCain
I just signed the following petition addressed to: Senators Carl Levin and John McCain.

----------------
Cut all ties between American Forces Network and Rush Limbaugh

The women of our Armed Forces should serve in an atmosphere that respects women. Sexism in the name of political freedom of speech has no place on military airwaves.

    1. Petition to KEEP Limbaugh shows up on WhiteHouse.gov

The far right are still crying "Freedom of Speech" when it comes to our request to remove Rush Limbaugh from military airwaves. They recently started a petition at WhiteHouse.gov complaining that removing Limbaugh would be a violation of the Constitution... as if Limbaugh has the right to tax payer funded airways to spread his message of sexism and hate. They really don't care what he says, even if it means fostering a climate that encourages sexual harassment and sexual assault.

It is going to take consistent pressure from multiple directions to convince AFN to remove him from their line-up. We are just 150 names from our goal and then I will send our petition to both Senators Levin and McCain and ask them both to take active steps towards removing Limbaugh from AFN.

Can you help get a few more signatures by tomorrow? I want to put this baby to bed and get is sent to those who can make a difference!

      Sincerely,

      Angie D.

    2. Limbaugh audience has been dropping for 3 years

AFN claims it is keeping Rush Limbaugh for popularity ratings. We know that is a load of baloney. The latest from The Daily Beast:

"As The Daily Beast’s John Avlon reported last week, the audience for right-wing talk has been shrinking since 2009. In some urban markets, Limbaugh’s audience has dropped by as much as half over the past three years."

And Limbaugh's audience doesn't even match military demographics:

"Limbaugh’s audience not only skews old; it skews male. It was already 72 percent male in 2009—more male than that of almost any other program on radio or TV."

It's time that Rush Limbaugh was off military airwaves. AFN is holding strong and needs to hear from our Senators. Please share the petition and help us reach our goal of 500 signatures (that's only about 200 more!). This military wife who is getting ready to pack up and move and can't spend all this time on activism is begging for your help!

      Sincerely,

      Angie

Senator Levin spoke out yesterday but said although he believes Limbaugh should be removed from AFN, that AFN should come to that decision themselves.

This petition needs more signers so that we can pressure both Sen. Levin and McCain to contact AFN directly and demand this change. This isn't about legislation - this is about stopping a climate of sexual harassment!

This will never stop as long as misogyny of any sort remains acceptable in military circles.
