Secretary Clinton: Support Saudi Women Fighting for the Right to Drive

Saudi Arabia is the only nation in the world that bans women from driving and a brave group of Saudi women have organized a campaign, Women2Drive, to overturn the archaic and unfair rule. One activist, Manal Al Sharif, is being held in jail for posting a video of herself driving on YouTube and other activists have been arrested and harassed. The women plan to take the wheel en masse on June 17th in defiance of the ban and the crack down on their activism.

Women2Drive activists say the ban subjects women to sexual harassment by taxi drivers and forces them to be dependent on drivers and male relatives. One woman posted on a Facebook group for the event, "It is not a revolution, it is not a plot, it is not a gathering and it is not a protest -- we are only requesting to drive our cars."

Sign this petition to call on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton - who made famous the phrase "women's rights are human rights" - to release a statement in support of the women's efforts to repeal the ban and call on King Abdullah to release activists arrested for driving and cease future arrests and harassment.

..having good friends in countries in the middle east, and a good college friend from saudi arabia..having almost potentially married someone from the country.. i identify with these women...i had said i would not be a good candidate to be married to someone from sa at that time as i would be in trouble in a week there esp with the things women cannot do like driving.. that i would be leading a revolt in week one for the right to drive...i have seen this happen a few times over the years and its happening again...the men as in my greek culture.. need to see the women for their counterpart and the strong help they can be as their partner by their side in all things and when they see what a relief it is to have the help of the women in the things they are restricted for now and how much easier it makes their lives.. they will come to their senses and not be afraid to let this happen.. what is it they are afraid of? the women working and making more money than they? and then they become house husbands and can sit around the house and eat bon bons and watch saudi soap operas or games all day? think about it men- would that be so bad? would it be SO bad? haha ! i can see you have not thought this through. maybe you WANT the women to take over the responsbilities- those games and those bon bons are waiting for you and your nice comfortable bed to take a nap whenever you want- and to play with your children who would go out of their minds to have you with them at home.. is it REALLY SO bad? no. give it up. come into this century. let the women drive.. let the women vote..let the women share the yoke of your burden.. take some pressure off.. and just LIVE life !.. and enjoy ! your best friend is there beside you waiting to share in the load...give her the reins and take a rest for a change !.. its NOT SO BAD !... eleni

The islam gives te woman the highest right (the only religion in the world!) but really nice 'guys' makes the laws.

Comparative to the street the woman will not have any contact with a man inside. Its a protection!!

I feel very very unconfortable when i take a taxi.

This makes no sense. A driver for a woman is a direct contact!!!!
