American food stores throw away tons of edible produce daily. Although many supermarket chains allow food banks and soup kitchens to recover this food, as protected by the federal Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act of 1986, Safeway Corp refuses to donate bruised or out of date produce due to the possibility of lawsuits. Meanwhile, soup kitchens cannot afford to give people healthy, nutritious meals. Tons of good food - often from across the country - is rotting in landfills, and increasing methane gasses. Safeway needs to join other, more compassionate food stores, and change its food waste policies.
