Safety Needs at Temple & Wall Streets in New Haven, Connecticut

    1. Petition by

      Benjamin Ackerman

      New Haven, CT

Due to aggressive motorists, who fail to yield to pedestrians, local residents have great difficulty crossing at this intersection. Over the past few months, there have been many close calls - almost on a daily basis one can observe near- collisions between vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. Wheelchair bound persons, who are difficult to see due to their lower profile, use this intersection daily. Moreover, there are many small children at the church nearby, who are also difficult to see when crossing.

I walk this intersection almost every day and would like to see it safer for pedestrians. It's possible for able bodied folks to navigate it, but much more difficult for pedestrians who have injuries or are in wheelchairs. Our city staff and engineers really need to put themselves in other people's shoes more because, speaking as someone who has suffered severe leg injuries in recent years, it is impossible for someone with even minor impediments to walk around Downtown New Haven. London has citywide traffic calming that reduces crossing distances for pedestrians to an absolute minimum, reduces speed, and installs raised xwalks in many locations - I had no trouble getting around there, even when I could barely walk.

TD is the best college and it would be even better if this could be fixed.

I am a Yale student residing in Timothy Dwight College, and the number of times I've almost been hit by a car is, frankly, frightening.

I have had several close calls of my own as a pedestrian at this street crossing
