Restore our Water

    1. Petition by

      Restore our Water

The middle Great Lakes have now set a new record low for December and are in Crisis. Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and Georgian Bay are losing 10 BILLION GALLONS PER DAY due to erosion of the St Clair River!

Specifically, erosion and semi-annual dredging of the St. Clair River bed is causing excess outflow from the Upper Great Lakes through the lower lakes and out to the Atlantic. The resulting reduced water levels have dried up wetlands and exposed shorelines are being taken over by the huge invasive reed Phragmites autralis.

The consequence is a rapidly deteriorating ecosystem, with fish and waterfowl dying, massive algal blooms, stranded cottages boathouses and docks, dry marinas and ships carrying 25% less loads.

The economic and ecological impacts have now reached Chicago. The Chicago River level is now almost level with Lake Michigan so that when the locks are open the river or canal water heavily polluted with untreated raw sewage is now going out to Chicago's waterfront. The problem was caused by humans and is solvable.

water levels affect us all, they are a source of our drinking water, transportation, climate, and I own property on Georgian Bay and have seen the level drop 6-8 feet since we purchased in the early 80's. Time to do something before it is too late!

Might help if they stopped the reversal of Chicago's rivers (back to into the lakes, instead of draining them into the Mississippi River) , after all the sewage issues that created epidemic sickness in the 1800's has since been dealt with.

Bonus that should help the invasive species of jumping carp from crossing into the Great Lakes Basin.

Extra Bonus - while the Mississippi levels may be affected, they should have a lot less trouble with catastrophic flooding we have seen in recent years - considering the extra capacity that would result.

Without water, humans can't live. We need to take immediate action on this issue.

Fresh water is the most important resource on this planet. Managing it must follow as a priority. I am also begining a small business connected to tourism and environmental stewardship. This is serious!

I have been a cottage owner on Lake Huron (Manitoulin Island) for 41 years and I am alarmed at the loss of fresh water that we have seen in Lakes Huron, Michigan and Georgian Bay over the past 20+ years. We need to stop[ the depletion of this invaluable resource now!
