Restore Funding for New York's Office for People with Developmental Disabilities

    1. Petition by

      Senator David Carlucci

In New York, more than $120 million dollars in cuts to the Office of People with Developmental Disabilities are set to take place. These cuts would have a direct impact on not-for-profit providers who provided critical services to those in need. Placing the burden of these financial cuts solely on people with developmental disabilities is not a balanced approach that should be undertaken.

If these cuts go through, staff layoffs and services would be negatively affected. We cannot allow the budget to be balanced on the backs of people with developmental disabilities. Please join me in urging the Governor and our state legislative leaders to work together to restore this vital funding.

To:
New York Governor
Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New York
I'm writing to ask that you please restore funding for the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities.

If these cuts go through, staff layoffs and services would be negatively affected. We cannot allow the budget to be balanced on the backs of people with developmental disabilities.

Sincerely,
[Your name]

I work for YAI and believe that those who suffer most are not the employees of agencies that provide critical service, but evidently it is those with developmental disabilities, those that are vulnerable and need the state of New York to care for them.

For 10 years I have worked with and provided services to people with DD. I have seen them grow, flourish and become productive members of society. We need more funding not less to continue the quality services we provide to this population.

This is important because I am a human being and the people affected by these cuts are also human beings. If we cannot provide services to our most vulnerable populations, then we should not consider ourselves part of a Judeo Christian morality. I incidently have a severely handicapped daughter, who I do not believe will be affected by these cuts, as she uses few services from this department, however, I know the people who will be affected and they do not deserve for cuts to be made on their backs.
