America is tired of paying billions of dollars for a failed policy that results in the arrest of an American approximately every 35 seconds. A majority of Americans now favor the legalization of marijuana.

There are about 850,000 arrests per year in America for marijuana. 1. About 89% of these arrests are for personal possession of marijuana. 2. Marijuana prohibition enforcement costs U.S. taxpayers billions of dollars each year. HR 2306: "Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act of 2011" seeks to regulate marijuana like alcohol. Regulation will produce billions of dollars in annual revenue and create jobs. Patients who have been prescribed marijuana should no longer have their medical treatments disrupted by federal prosecutions. Marijuana is generally accepted as a healthier and less intoxicating drug than alcohol. 3,4. It is time to end the hypocritical double standard regarding marijuana and alcohol.

Representative F. James Sesenbrenner, Jr. should schedule a hearing for HR 2306 to discuss the facts about marijuana. We ask our elected officials to show compassion to the victims of marijuana prohibition and let our economy benefit from what the nation wants. Personal use of marijuana should not be a crime.

1. Police made 853,838 arrests in 2010 for marijuana-related offenses, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's annual Uniform Crime Report. http://blog.norml.org/2011/09/19/marijuana-arrests-driving-americas-so-called-drug-war-latest-fbi-data-shows/

2. U.S. law enforcement made 847,863 arrests on marijuana charges, 89 percent of which were for possession, not sale or manufacture -- more arrests for marijuana possession than for all violent crimes combined. An American was arrested on marijuana charges every 37 seconds. http://www.mpp.org/media/press-releases/marijuana-arrests-drop-for.html

4. Marijuana poses a much less serious public health problem than is currently posed by alcohol and tobacco. http://drugwarfacts.org/cms/?q=node%2F53
