Report the huge protests at Idinthakarai

    1. Petition by

      Roshen Chandran

      Bangalore, India

We urge the editors of the English media to report the important people's struggle in Idinthakarai.

300+ women and 25 men are on an indefinite hunger strike against the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Idinthakarai. Over 9000 people crowd the protest pandals every day. Your coverage of the protests is muted and a grave injustice to people using non-violent, democratic methods to make their demands.

We urge you to report these important people's struggles.

Status update as of 3:00pm on May 6: The condition of the 302 women hunger strikers has been deteriorating steadily. Two of the 35 men strikers have been afflicted with viral fever and have been isolated from the rest of the group for fear of any contagion among others. The following women have collapsed and removed to the nearby hospital: Soosai Lourde (55), Manjula (33), Sahayam (45), Jacqueline (42), Pasili (36) and Bama (40).

Thank you for signing the petition urging editors to cover the protests at Idinthakarai. Times of India, the largest selling newspaper in India, has reported the protests this morning. This is a small step, but significant.

Last night, the police started gathering in thousands around Idinthakarai. There were rumours of imminent arrests and a curfew. For now, things seem calm.

We need to continue putting pressure on other editors to break their silence. Please share this petition with friends who are against media muffling the voices of non-violent protesters.

This petition is the first I've heard about this; you'd think that over 300 people going on indefinate hunger strike might at least get a mention in the world news sections of some of our media? I was also shocked to hear that the energy companies are building nuclear power in India under the condition that they bare no liability in the event of a nuclear accident. How does the saying go? first they ignore you, then they fight you, then you win.

I value my life and the life of every sentient being on our beautiful planet. A nuclear power station will destroy parts of our planets (here South India) just as it has in the UK, France, Chernobyle, and Japan, that we know about. Stop this suicidal insanity.
