Petitioning The President of the United States

Reauthorize Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA)

This petition will be delivered to:

The President of the United States

The U.S. House of Representatives

The U.S. Senate

I’m taking a stand to end slavery: modern-day labor, sex trafficking and child abuse…

Stephanie Brown, Richard’s 17-year old granddaughter, died of a fatal drug-overdose on March 16, 2007, after being hired at a local downriver strip-club in Lincoln Park, Michigan, where two patrons (a volunteer basketball coach and an ordained minister) including a dancer at the club, sex-trafficked Stephanie to a local motel down the street and where she died that morning.

Together the State of Michigan and Stephanie’s family successfully prosecuted the drug-dealing, junior high school volunteer coach and later settled out-of-court with the strip-club for employing an underage person for sex-work. However, Richard continues to pursue other legal rights, causes and criminal investigations in human and labor trafficking cases regarding Stephanie’s death at the local, state and federal levels including international awareness and education.

Combating Modern Slavery 150 Years After the Emancipation Proclamation

Luis CdeBaca serves as the Ambassador-at-Large to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons.
On September 22, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, announcing his intention to emancipate all the slaves in the Confederate states that did not return to the Union within 100 days. On January 1, 1863, he declared free the 3.1 million slaves in those states.
Today, we celebrate the 150th anniversary of that date in 1862, which heralded the victory of freedom and justice, and our country's ongoing commitment to those values. Yet, at the same time, as many as 27 million men, women, and children around the world live in a state of modern

The TVPA matters to me because I know survivors of human trafficking, and I don't want my family or friends to fall victim to this! South Carolina needs to step up to the plate and keep moving forward with the fight against human trafficking. Let's support the citizens of our state and of this country by reauthorizing the TVPA to prosecute traffickers, and protect victims!

I do not support this act. "MISSING THE MARK: WHY THE TRAFFICKING VICTIMS PROTECTION ACT FAILS TO PROTECT SEX TRAFFICKING VICTIMS IN THE UNITED STATES" states on pg. 18 "By distinguishing between “sex traficking” and “severe sex trafficking” and choosing to decriminalize and provide assistance to only the latter category of victims, Congress made a judgment about who is deserving of state protection. This kind of essentialism of what it means to be a sex trafficking victim is harmful because it deªnes the average victim in such a manner that it necessarily makes all women who choose sex work “bad” prostitutes who are not worthy of protection." The fates of many children to live a life that can only be made better by death or the happy safe life they deserve is in your hands. The young people should be one of your main priorities and child abusers taken off the street
