Bullying is not merely good-natured teasing. Bullying is abuse. Bullies are not having fun. They have but one intent: To harm another person. This petition is dedicated to Kenneth Weishuhn, a 14-year-old who was courageous enough to come out to his family and classmates, but not tough enough to absorb the weeks of bullying he suffered both in the halls of his school or on Facebook. On April 14, Kenneth committed suicide. He is not the first student to be bullied to death and, sorry to say, he will probably not be the last.
Bullying is at epidemic proportions in our nation's schools, and it's time to stop worrying about the First Amendment rights of bullies. Bullying will not stop unless it is addressed beyond the school system, and bullies will not stop unless they are held accountable for their actions.
I call on the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate to pass Senator Al Franken's Student Non-Discrimination Act.
