Save the Lake Maumelle Watershed

    1. Petition by

      Occupy Little Rock

Lake Maumelle is a pristine reservoir that provides clean, safe drinking water to over 400,000 people in the Central Arkansas area. In a time of growing water scarcity, the capital city of Little Rock and its surrounding areas are extremely fortunate to have such a valuable resource. The densely forested watershed surrounding the reservoir provides natural filtration mechanisms that keep silt, pollutants, and other runoff from entering the public water system.

Now, the integrity and health of the Watershed is being threatened by a single developer hoping to have its way with the proposed Land Use Plan and accompanying Zoning Codes. This is not the first time Deltic Timber and the Pulaski County Quorum Court have changed the face of our city, and their new attempts are even more insidious than those set in place years ago. By hoping to profit from denser housing tracts than recommended, the potential development of the Watershed threatens the drinking water of hundreds of thousands to enrich the wallets of a wealthy few.

When Forbes looked at the 80 largest Metropolitan Statistical Areas for which toxicity data is available, it ranked Little Rock as the second cleanest city in America, and one of the main reasons it achieved this ranking was because of its clean, high-quality drinking water, which was also ranked second overall. Additionally, the U.S. Geological Survey called Lake Maumelle one of the cleanest lakes in the Southeastern U.S.

Central Arkansas Water has worked hard for over 50 years to build and protect a water source that is envied around the country. We should not throw it all away and raze centuries of trees for a few tacky subdivisions. Increased pollution means increased cost for us, the rate payers.

LR is my hometown, I grew up with the beauty of Lake Maumelle, it was and still is a valuable resource for the community that I love so dearly. Please preserve the integrity of our natural riches rather than giving somebody access to destroy in the name of a dollar. LR is BETTER than that!!! KRS
