Benzodiazapine withdrawal has been documented to be forty times harder to withdraw from than heroin, and many people are  disabled for years from protracted withdrawal syndromes. In Britain this is recognized as a public health epidemic. This article suggests that these drugs are safe and non-addictive.

    1. August 2013 Update

As I write this, we have 630 signatures. The opportunity we have here is to document the tragedy of benzo withdrawal. My intention is to keep this going. As the prescriptions keep getting written, the suffering grows. In response to this, we document, document document. If you have already signed this, think about the people around you. In these turbulent times, more and more people see their physicians and talk about difficulty sleeping or feeling overwhelmed with stress. Out comes the prescription pad. Don't assume that the person standing next to you in line at the grocery store doesn't want to hear about this. If he or she isn't taking a benzo, what are the chances that person doesn't know someone suffering? The pharmaceutical-Medical complex has made it clear that it puts profits ahead of health, convenience ahead of caring. Numbers speak. Let's get those numbers.

Psychology today has removed the comments that were made yesterday because of personal attacks and abusive language contained in letters responding. It is understandable that suffering people are angry, but we want to succeed in saving others from harm and civility is tantamount. Although the comments were removed, Psychology Today has posted the petition, I see this as most reasonable and even helpful on their part. Now it is up to us. Thank you all, and let's get those signatures.

Thank you, those who have given me feedback, I have slightly reworded the petition. Many have died in benzodiazapene withdrawal from lack of education and support, but there is no reason whatsoever for anyone reading this to believe they cannot recover. Remember, Friends Do Not Let Friends Cold Turkey. Also, because I made a mistake in calling PsychRights.org "Alaskan", I have replaced that with my name. I am Educational Director of The Law Project for Psychiatric Rights (PsychRights.org).

I'm currently in withdrawal. This is the worst experience I have ever dealt with. Benzodiazepines should be banned. In the past 5 months I have been to the hospital due to scary withdrawal symptoms. I'm scared for when I'm done with my taper and pray I will feel normal like I did prior to klonopin.

Suffering from horrific symptoms and all kind off neurological complaints still after withdrawing 1.5 year ago from benzodiazepine! Every day is a nightmare or hell, if your didn't use these meds you can't State that they are safe!

Tolerance withdrawal / loss of functioning since 2008, and current withdrawal syndrome undermined ability to work and live independently.
