As with the rest of this country, I was totally sickened about what happened at the Sandy Hook elementary school last Friday(12/14). But, do you actually believe that stripping away our right to bear arms is going to stop this from happening. The area in which the school is located already has strict gun laws and was declared a "Gun Free" zone, but again, criminals and those intent on causing mayhem don't follow rules. I believe that if we authorized citizens that have completed a through background check to conceal and carry, these tragedies could quite possibly be prevented or at least had a very different outcome. Mexico is currently a "GUN FREE" zone, and the cartel is taking full advantage of this. Criminals and again, those who wish to cause harm, don't care about gun laws, a gun free zone means there is no one to stand against them when they attack. Again, what happened is sickening, I am father of four and could never fathom the grief those parents and the loved ones of those killed are going through at this time, especially with the holidays so close. But, think long and hard, before we go stripping away the freedoms that made this country what it is. If we continue on this path of downward spiral of freedoms and rights to our citizens, how long after before we turn into a country that is more dictatorship and only outlaws have guns to where it is unsafe to walk the streets and our government controls everything we do like the dictatorships of the 1940's!!!!

Respectfully: I am not forcing you to carry or even have a gun, any gun. You want to ban guns and take away 2nd Amendment Rights, because why? Less guns right = fewer gun fatalities right? Wrong, You call 9-1-1 and gun-owners will keep their guns, and their life, okay? I want the anti-gunners and anti 2nd Amendment supporters to post a bond for the lives lost when a former gun owner doesn't have a superior weapon with more bullets and keep that policy paid, because it will be paying. How will you feel when that bad guy kills another child, who knows maybe mine, maybe yours? The police cannot be everywhere and protect everyone all the time, so please choose a sacrificial lamb. We know what happens when the bad guy with the gun (any gun) shows up to a gun-free zone. Must we repeat this exercise again and again. Oh thats right, we have. Has anyone given any consideration of just how fast a simple revolver can be emptied and reloaded in a 3-minute period? 100? 200?

Joe, you are dead on with what you said in this petition!! The higher the legal gun ownership in any given area, the lower the crime always is. Where crime is always the highest, is where guns are not allowed because the criminals know they will not face a credible challenge to their crimes!!

I believe that guns are the great equalizer between the sexes. In the realm of self-defense, any woman has the capacity to learn to safely use and handle a gun to protect herself. I believe in responsible gun ownership, and think that many of the gun bans are reactionary, especially in regards to the mentally ill. To date, there is no evidence that the average person suffering with a mental illness is any more likely to commit a crime with a gun than any non-mentally ill person, and yet we are being stigmatized because of a few unbalanced individuals. The latest study also showed that psychologists were unable to differentiate successfully between those who were likely to use a gun for the commission of a violent act and those who weren't. Remember that mental illness includes PTSD, which affects many many veterans and retired law enforcement agents who would never think about using a gun irresponsibly. You wouldn't lock up 100 people because 10 of them are going to commit a crime, but you will blanket strip the rights of all those with any mental illness because of some sensational outliers. We need to stop writing laws based on kneejerk responses to things that the media sensationalize. Instead, we would to better to work on the problems that cause crime, support availability of mental health care, attempt to reduce of the stigma of mental illness, and teach comprehensive gun safety to everyone.
