Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act (H.R. 503/S. 727)

Although horses aren't being slaughtered for human consumption in the U.S., tens of thousands of them are being transported each year to slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico. Horses are subjected to intense suffering and abuse during the transport, then are inhumanely slaughtered to provide meat for other countries.

The Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act, introduced in 2009, would make it illegal to slaughter horses, or to transport horses across the border for slaughter, saving thousands of horses from cruelty and death.

Send your representatives a message to support the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act!

Some say that cases of horse neglect have been on the rise over the past few years. But rather than attribute it to the most likely cause — people unable to afford caring for their horses in a struggling economy — slaughter proponents blame it on...

Today, people across the U.S. will be picking up their phones and dialing Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (202-225-0100 in D.C., or 415-556-4862 in San Francisco) to ask her to schedule a vote on the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act, H.R. 503. Her...

The Idaho Senate just passed a resolution in favor of legalizing horse slaughter. Sadly, they're just one of many Western and Midwestern states hopping on the slaughter wagon, using the same rationale we've heard before — blaming the rise in...

      Stephanie Feldstein

It's been a political soap opera for horses in Missouri. The legislative session finally ended last week without giving the green light to horse slaughterhouses but, for awhile, it was a close call.
There haven't been any horse slaughterhouses in...

What do Missouri and Tennessee have in common? They both have a state horse (only ten states do), and they both want to make it legal to slaughter horses for human consumption. (Read about Missouri's horse slaughtering bill here.)

I bought my first horse from a meat auction, she ended up being worth way more than I paid for her. These animals do not deserve to be treated inhumanely.

      Thank you
