Many of our foodservice workers at the University of Miami earn barely more than a minimum wage. For many of them, health insurance is unaffordable. Many have little job security and without a union they have no chance to negotiate a fair contract. As members of the University of Miami community, we support those who work hard on our campus in their fight for dignity and fair treatment. As proud Canes we believe that our university has to be held to a higher moral standard. We ask and urge the University of Miami to ensure that all Chartwells workers are able to organize a union without any fear of retaliation and harassment. As the indirect employer of these workers, the University of Miami administration should not sit indifferently by while their workers face unfair working conditions. We believe the University of Miami should openly support the worker's right to form a union and negotiate a fair contract with a living wage and affordable health care options.

Many of these workers are very sweet people who add a lot to my university experience. They deserve to be fairly compensated

Because fairness should not be bound by class stratification.

How can a university that states in their core values that they will "provide students with the foundations for ethical citizenship and service to others" sit by and let campus workers be unjustly treated? UMiami, practice what you preach. These people deserve respect and support as they exercise their legal right to make their lives better.

I am a Miami alumna, and my little brother is considering starting at UM in the fall. I just learned that the dining halls are open in the middle of the night. That's a great perk for the students-- but it's little wonder that the food service workers want to unionize, now that they have to work until 2 in the morning! Let the workers have a voice.

All working people deserve the right to unite with their coworkers and sit down with their boss to negotiate for living wages and access to benefits that keep their families healthy and safe.
