Pass legislation that gets children out of hazardous work environments

    1. Petition by

      Ryan Cho

      Burnaby, Canada

Child Labour in British Columbia is alive and well. Since 2004, child labour standards have been seriously eroded, allowing kids as young as 12 to work up to 35 hours a week, even in work environments that are hazardous. It's time for government to take responsibility for the safety of children who work, rather than leaving it as the responsibility of the parent to ensure the workplace is safe and suitable for their children; restricting both the amount of hours children can work and then kind of work they are permitted to do. Please help families come first. Government needs to pass legislation that gets children out of hazardous and inappropriate work environments and the time for action is NOW!

We need to recongize that this is only part of the problem though. Extreme poverty creates conditions that encourage child labour in families that need income to barely make ends meet. Both must be addressed.

Every day since 2004 I have hoped that it will not take a terrible tragedy to fix this situation. PLEASE! Bring in legislation, regulations and enforcement measures that protect children from exploitation and injury NOW!

I am very concerned about the safety of children in the workplace. Children need to be attending to their schooling, and spending their free time with their families, involved in active play and social interactions. I don't think they should be working at all, but if they do, the highest possible standards of safety and training must be in place and regulated.

Canadians tend to think of child labour as an international issue - a problem that exists only in other countries. But they're wrong. BC's child labour laws are actually more lax than countries like Mexico and Bangladesh. We need stronger protections and restrictions on child labour. We also need to adopt living wage policies for families so that employment for children and youth is a choice and not a necessity.

Children need the protection of legislation and the law to prevent exploitation. This has been demonstrated in history many times.
