Options for Sexual Health believes the Province of British Columbia could save over $40 Million every year and gain significant social benefits by providing free contraception to every resident.
Recently in the United States, the Obama administration approved regulations which will remove all cost barriers to contraception in the health insurance plans of Americans. This is a huge victory for women's health in the United States. Many other countries already subsidize access to contraception.
Sadly, in Canada, where we pride ourselves on our progressive health care system, universal access is not yet the reality. This is an important opportunity for the BC Government to show national leadership and to be the first province to reap the resulting financial, health and social benefits.
The time has come to provide publicly funded access to contraception to all BC residents. This would reduce costs to the health care and social service systems and provide individuals with greater control over their reproductive health.
