The Harriet Tubman Leadership Academy for Young Women is Portland's only all-girl public college preparatory school, grades 6-12. It focuses on math and science. Its outcomes have been outstanding, but it is danger of being closed unless the Portland Public School Board is convinced parents city-wide will send their daughters there over the long term. One of the challenges has been getting the word out to prospective parents about how successful the program has been in developing math and science capabilities of these girls and young women.

If you are a parent of a young girl in Portland, or anticipate being a parent in the future, you can help send that message by signing this "Yes, I'd send my daughter there" petition.  In the comments section, if applicable, please indicate how long it will be before your daughter will be going into 6th grade so that the school board can get see what demand may look like in the future, and so that the PTA can keep you abreast of goings on at the school as you get closer to deciding on 6-12 grade schools.

I have visited Tubman and seen the remarkable results there, achieved in a very short time. Imagine the possibilities of what Tubman can do given more time and more resources. The community is mobilized behind the school now - there is real opportunity here.

I want all young women to have access to quality science and math education. The Leadership Academy prepares young women for college and careers in high paying fields, instead of low-paying service sector jobs. We need this school for our young women and for the health of the neighborhood!

As a North Portland parent, I want my daughter (who is due in July, so in 12 years) to have this school as a strong, viable option for her middle and high school experience if she feels this is the best way to develop her leadership and aptitude in math & science.
