2012 was a historic year for LGBT Americans. From marriage equality victories in four states to the election of Tammy Baldwin, the first openly LGBT U.S. Senator, together we helped push equality forward like never before.
Not only do we now have our first out voice in the U.S. Senate, but we also have the largest number of out federal lawmakers in our country's history. And seven states made history by electing their first or only openly LGBT state lawmakers – even in places where some said it couldn't happen like Texas, North Dakota and Pennsylvania.
LGBT leaders like Tammy give our community a powerful voice in decisions that affect our lives. As we saw with marriage equality in Maryland and Washington, having out legislators makes politics personal and is key to achieving the equality we deserve. LGBT leaders are also role models who show all of us that you can be honest about who you are, overcome tough challenges and succeed.
These victories show what's possible – but we need to keep the momentum going and the road to victory isn't easy. LGBT candidates typically must raise twice the money that straight candidates need to raise. But with a strong network of support, LGBT candidates can run and win anywhere.
Pledge your support to stand with the next trailblazing LGBT candidates who will serve out and proud as mayors, city council members, state legislators and Congressmen and women in every state. Be part of a winning team that’s inspiring change in people and policy across America.
