People of Faith: Tell Rep. Ragan That Every Child is Made in the Image of God and Deserves Dignity

HB1332 by Rep. John Ragan is the House companion bill to Sen. Stacey Campfield's Don't Say Gay bill, which he has renamed the Classroom Protection Act. This bill would harm students by breaking trust and confidentiality as well as creating an environment conducive to bullying. No matter our political or theological leanings, we all can agree that children and teens should not be killing themselves because they have been placed in a situation so hostile and isolating toward them that they feel there is no other alternative.

There is no need for this legislation. It will do harm.

Children should have a "safe" person they can confide in, without fear of judgment or fear of having their confidentiality violated. We can't afford to lose any more children to suicide.

This bill violates the ability of school counselors and teachers to be a safe place for students to seek help in an uncertain time of identity development. A much better bill would sponsor more adequate training and education around the issues for our teachers, counselors, and administrators. Be a model of wise leadership, not a sign of the divisive intolerance and ignorance on issues that so radically affect our young people.

As a Transgender Christian person I believe that this Bill will harm students who are afraid to come out and sometimes have few resources to talk. If this Bill is passed it could cause more student suicides or students being forced from their homes. Would you want that on your conscious.?
