Protect student's sexual orientation and gender identity/expression

The current Student Handbook at Our Lady of the Lake reads: “OLLU is a person-centered learning community. It offers opportunities for students to grow in all the dimensions of their being. Those who can benefit from its programs and services are welcomed, regardless of age, gender, background, ethnicity or belief.”

See anything missing?

Sexual orientation and gender identity/expression are noticeably absent. With this absence, OLLU faces an obstacle in our effort to become the best university in San Antonio and the state of Texas. The current policy weakens our school’s competitiveness in attracting a diverse student population and it also allows students to be discriminated against on our campus.

As an alumni of OLLU, I am disapointed to learn that is is even an issue. I hope this petition will send the message to the OLLU board and leadership that the time has come to make this change. This is indeed a step in the right direction to actually living the mission of the school and including everyone, not only some people. When I was a student there, I remember there being a debate over what rights should be extended to a transgendered student. I didn't graduate 10,20,or 30 years ago...it's only been 5 years ago and this was an issue. If students are good enough to take their money for tuition, they should be good enough to expect the same equal treatment to get an education in environment that is respectful of everyone! peAce!

As alumni, I believe that we need to encourage our students and community to understand differences and embrance diversity; educate the masses and create harmony in the absence of ignorance.

Dignity and Respect for all, let us embrace the idea of inclusion not exclusion, and let it begin here at OLLU.

Everyone regardless of who they are should be able to benefit from all the programs offered at OLLU.

are welcomed, regardless of age, gender, background, ethnicity or belief.” It does state it clearly in the OLLU hand book but if you want it to be more specific and state it specifically I will sign it.
