The issue with the word is racial but also offends because of the long history of sexual objectification of native women. 25% of women of all races have been victims of sexual assault, and the rate is much higher for native women, maybe even 50%. Most crime in the U.S. is black on black and white on white, but crimes of sexual violence directed at native women are predominantly perpetrated by white men. The use of any term that differentiates native women and has a history of being used to dehumanize, target, and objectify native women is offensive to lots of native people. Because of the high rates of sexual assault and racial dynamic in those statistics, you will be hard pressed to find a native family that has not had someone for whom "being treated like a squaw" is not exceptionally painful and personal. (The writing of Dr. Anton Treuer.)

The term Sqauw is a racial slur towards native woman. One that i myself have been called and tormented with. Starting this petition was because of the initial response of Old town Baking company. When notified of how truely offensive most native people find the "S" word they replied with anti-indian statements, bigotry and race ranting.

After watching it all unfold i decided to start a change here.

Please Old Town Bakery remove the term squaw from you packaging labels and change the name of your bread. It is not an acceptable term.
