Victory

On February 21, Governor John Kasich signed HB 14, repealing the only statewide breed discriminatory law in the U.S. Abolishing canine profiling in the Buckeye state was an historic accomplishment made possible by Change.org members, with Best Friends Animal Society and the Ohio Coalition of Dog Advocates leading the charge. Ohio Coalition of Dog Advocates President Jean Keating started a petition on Change.org that gathered nearly 20,000 signatures, as well as support from actor Ian Somerhalder.

Ohio is the only place in the U.S. with statewide discrimination against dogs. If you live in Ohio and have a pit bull -- or any muscular, short-haired dog who could be mistaken for a pit bull -- your dog is automatically considered vicious.

Last year, a bill was introduced that would remove pit bulls from the state's definition of vicious dogs. The bill passed the House of Representatives, but was never called to vote in the Senate.

To start off this year's legislative session, Rep. Barbara Sears (R-Lucas County) reintroduced legislation (H.B. 14) that would end Ohio's breed discrimination.

Join advocates around the country in urging the state legislature to make it a priority to pass H.B. 14 to end breed discrimination in Ohio.

via Ecorazzi: Nelson wrote, “Ohio is the only state that discriminates against dogs who share a cluster of physical characteristics by classifying this group as ‘vicious’ without any regard to individual dog behavior…These dogs are considered ‘vicious’ at birth, even though there are countless dogs of unknown heritage who are deemed ‘pit bulls’ who are wonderful family pets. In addition to being beloved pets, many ‘pit bulls’ are show dogs, search and rescue dogs, and service dogs. The current law infringes on responsible dog owners’ rights to own any dog they choose, no matter what the dog’s appearance. Dogs, like people, are individuals and should each be judged on his/her own merits.”

As a born in Ohio non-resident, I think your current policy is completely outdated and ridiculous. I work with dog rescue groups, and there is no one way to determine a dog's viciousness just by breed. It is always the result of the owner/abuser that makes the dog vicious, and many times it can be rehabilitated. This is one of the many reasons I don't live in Ohio anymore, and took my tax dollars to Texas.

I hope that this bill passes. It is unfair to judge a dog because of peoples stupidity. One of the best dogs I have ever owned was my Renegade an American Pitbull Terrier he was the love of my life and he pulled me thru some of the roughest times in my life! Without him I dont know where I would be. I want to start a rescue for these sweet misunderstood dogs, so that I can make them working dogs I want the world to see how wonderful they really are!! I cant wait until this bill is put into affect.

The pit bull's temperment is one of the BEST among all dogs. It was once considered America's Family Dog, where as now the lab is. I have 4 pit bulls and they are the most loving and sweetest dogs around.

I am signing this because it is not fair to judge an entire breed of any animal based on the improper and irresponsible actions of a few owners. Any dog can be brought up vicious. It is not in a breed's genetics, it is in the way they are raised.
