Removing Certified Librarians from Elementary and Junior High Schools District wide contradicts the district's mission to improve failing schools, support successful schools, and raise the bar for student achievement. It contradicts the adoption of the Utah Core Curriculum, with its emphasis on inquiry-based learning. It contradicts the data from studies that show that schools with endorsed librarians prove more successful than schools without. (Amy Jamison) (See Library Research Service school impact studies:

Librarians play an essential role in a public school's faculty. They collaborate with departments and teachers, they mentor students who literally need them for their own survival, they are on the pulse of what is needed and necessary, whether it be in technology or books, and the list goes on. In the end, a secondary school without a librarian will be on the losing end. Ogden City's superintendent should expect test scores to plummet, teacher efficacy to drop, and self-esteem of the students he serves (operative word) to be at an all-time low. Everyone loses.

I am an educator in this district and I have collaborated with our librarian in several instances and I utilize her as an invaluable resource for success within my classroom. Anywhere from asking for recommendations of books to read with my class (I am not a Language Arts teacher). How to teach specific parts of the research process. I have even utilized my class time to take students to the library to learn how it is classified and compare that with how plants and animals are classified. She teaches many skills to my students in her classroom (the library is one) in conjuction with me to reinforce learning in ways that I am not trained to do as efficiently.

As a former teachers, I believe that librarians are crucial to best education practices helping teachers instill a love a reading and research to their students. Teachers need the extra help a librarian provides in these critical education areas.

If you remove the librarians, the library quickly becomes a very under-utilized resource. It turns from a room full of information and adventure to a room of books without a guide accessed by students that don't know how or lack the motivation to figure it out themselves.
