No more people leaving animals unattended in a vehicle: E-mail Rep./Sen. and ask for tougher Laws, Sign Petition

I have recently begun to think about the laws we have about animals and transportation. Often I will go out someplace, only to see some dog barking in the unattended car next to us. Have you ever been to the grocery store and seen a dog locked in the car? 94% of people have according to my survey of my DeKalb New Tech classmates, and 79% percent think that the dog shouldn’t be there. Many people do not realize the danger of leaving a pet inside a vehicle for “Just a moment.” Well, the truth is, it only takes a moment for your animal to die or be severely brain damaged from the heat that gets trapped in your car.
On a nice day of 88 degrees fahrenheit, the temperatures inside your car can soar to an unbelievable 105 degrees fahrenheit. You may be thinking, well I don’t leave my dog in the car unless I have the windows down. But, the truth is that the temperature’s only slightly differ whether you have two windows cracked or four windows cracked! It doesn’t matter. In fact, during a study conducted by the RedRover organization, even with all four windows cracked on a 90 degree day the temperature still reached 108 degrees!
Currently only 14 states have laws about leaving your dog in a parked car! The penalties for the different states vary from a Class 1 misdemeanor in Arizona, to up to 6 months of jail in California. Leaving a dog in a car alone should not be taken lightly. A canine can not take the heat like you, with only the pads of their feet and panting to cool them off, the heat is a battle a pet surely will not win.
With things such as, nerve damage, heart problems, liver damage, brain damage, and even death as side effects, who would want to leave their dog trapped in the car? You may be asking yourself why you should care in such a time as fall where the temperatures are increasingly getting lower, but the heat is only one issue when it comes to leaving behind a dog. People don’t think about the distress it puts the animal through. You have no idea what could happen while the owner is gone. A teen kid could taunt the dog making it go crazy inside and possibly cause injury to itself. Not to mention, anything the owner leaves behind becomes fair game. With no supervision, nothing is stopping poor Baxter from hopping in the front seat any eating anything from cigarettes, to a pack of gum. According to BBC News, when Juliette Piesley left her dog alone, it ate the immobiliser chip needed to start her electric car. Just think about the life threatening items the dog could have swallowed. This dog and it’s owner are lucky that it was only a chip.
So, who thinks it’s okay to leave their dog in a car? Well, certainly not my Dekalb New Tech classmates! So, if you would like to take the pledge not to leave your dog unattended in a parked car like me, simply go to mydogiscool.com. Here you can learn all about how to help inform owners of the risks of leaving their dog behind in the vehicle. You can also print off the pledge, take a picture of it with your dog, post it on the gallery, and join the thousands of others in the race to save man’s best friend.

My dogs love to go bye bye, and I take them with me if I dont intend to stay anywhere they cant go in to, or if I am only running in somewhere to get something quick. They get mad if I dont take them, and I have found that if before I take off to do things, if I just run them around the block for a ride they seem quite content. Try it, it works!!
